This charming rodent is the European Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), a species native to the woodlands of Europe and Asia. Its coat is a striking rusty red, which provides excellent camouflage among the branches and leaves of its arboreal home. A key feature is its long, bushy tail, which is used for balance as it leaps between trees and for communication. This individual is caught mid-meal, deftly holding a small piece of food in its paws while surrounded by a scattering of autumn leaves.
