The bright and active fish in this coral reef habitat is a Yellow Tang (Zebrasoma flavescens). My decades as a marine biologist have given me a great appreciation for the vital role these fish play in the ecosystem. This species is easily recognizable by its solid, brilliant yellow coloration and flat, oval body. The Yellow Tang is a herbivore, and it serves as a natural maintenance crew for coral reefs by feeding on filamentous algae that can otherwise smother and kill the coral. They are found throughout the Pacific and Indian Oceans, where they dart through the reef, using their sharp snouts to graze on algae. Their peaceful nature and vibrant color make them one of the most popular fish in saltwater aquariums around the world.
