Standing alert on a perch against a clean, diffused grey background is the male Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), a spectacular riverine bird. The bird is captured in a classic side profile, emphasizing its stocky body, oversized head, and its most vital tool the long, straight, black, dagger-like bill, ready for an immediate plunge. Its back, wings, and head are covered in shimmering, intensely bright turquoise-blue feathers, contrasting brilliantly with the deep rust-orange of its breast and flanks. A thin white patch on the throat and another behind the eye break up the dark blue head. The intense focus visible in its large, dark eye, complemented by the specialized morphology of its beak, perfectly illustrates the Kingfishers role as a highly efficient, high-speed piscivore across its vast Eurasian range.
