The complex creature with the vast, trailing appendages is a Lion's Mane Jellyfish (Cyanea capillata). In my long career observing marine life, this is truly one of the most awe-inspiring species due to its sheer scale. It is renowned as the largest known jellyfish, with some specimens' tentacles reaching extraordinary lengths. Its bell, a translucent dome, is just the beginning of its form. Below, a dense, curtain-like mass of thousands of hair-thin tentacles hangs down, used to capture a wide range of prey, from small fish to other jellyfish. This species represents the pinnacle of Cnidarian evolution, a powerful and mesmerizing drifter that dominates its place in the cold ocean waters.
