The glowing creature adrift in the darkness is a Spotted Jellyfish (Phyllorhiza punctata). With my three decades of fieldwork, I can tell you that this species is distinguished by its vibrant, blue-hued bell, which is decorated with a pattern of delicate white spots. These markings serve a dual purpose, offering camouflage while giving the creature its common name. Unlike many of their relatives, these jellyfish are efficient swimmers, using powerful pulses of their bell to move through the water with purpose. They do not possess long, trailing tentacles; instead, they have a cluster of short, frilly oral arms that act like a living filter, sifting plankton from the water. The stark contrast of its luminous body against the deep black background is a testament to the elegant simplicity of life in the ocean.
