This impressive moment captures a Red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) being carried away by a powerful Osprey (Pandion haliaetus). My career has given me many opportunities to witness the intricate dance between predator and prey, and this is a classic example. The Osprey is a specialized fish-eating raptor, often called a "fish hawk," that is found near water bodies on every continent except Antarctica. The Red drum is a large, hard-fighting fish native to the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. It is a prized game fish known for its bronze color and the signature black spot, or "ocellus," near its tail, which serves to confuse predators. The Osprey's incredible hunting prowess is on full display here; it dives feet-first to seize its prey with its uniquely adapted talons and scales on the soles of its feet, allowing it to grip slippery fish and carry them off to feed.
