The striking passerine perched on this log is a European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris), captured here displaying its magnificent non-breeding or fresh winter plumage. The birds body is predominantly black, but the entire feather coat is richly spangled with bright white to buff spots, which contrast brilliantly with the deep color.
