The many striped fish swimming among the corals are Sergeant Major Damselfish (Abudefduf saxatilis). As a marine biologist with thirty years of experience, I have seen how this species serves as a bustling, social cornerstone of coral reef communities across the globe. These fish are easily identified by their light bodies marked with five distinct vertical black bars, a pattern that mimics the rank insignia of a military sergeant. Found in tropical waters worldwide, these fish are incredibly active and territorial, especially during breeding season. They are omnivores, grazing on algae and feeding on small invertebrates in the water column. They are known for their tireless and fast-moving demeanor, constantly darting through the reef to protect their nests and forage for food. Their presence is a telltale sign of a healthy, dynamic reef environment.
