This striking bird, observed in a close-up portrait, is a Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus), exhibiting one of the many popular captive color mutations—specifically a variation of the blue series. The small parrots breast feathers are a vibrant, almost neon turquoise blue, contrasting with the paler white forehead and face. The back of the head and nape are intricately barred with fine black scalloping on a white base, a pattern that extends down the sides of the throat. A series of deep blue to black throat spots are visible below the beak. The cere, which is slightly bluish-white and appears slightly textured, suggests this is likely a female or a young male. This birds bright, domesticated colors stand in sharp contrast to the wild-type green, yet it retains the species’ characteristic plump body and expressive, dark eye, making it a beloved companion bird worldwide.
