TextAloud: Read Aloud with AI Voices

Highlight text on any page and read it aloud using OpenRouter text-to-speech models, with a live price estimate.

TextAloud reads web pages out loud in natural-sounding AI voices. Highlight some text, click Read aloud, and listen. You always see the price before you pay anything. GETTING STARTED 1. Get an OpenRouter API key at openrouter.ai/keys and add a little credit. 2. Click the TextAloud icon in your toolbar and paste in your key. 3. Pick a voice, and you're ready. WAYS TO LISTEN • Highlight text on any page, then click Read aloud on the small card that appears • Highlight text and press Alt+Shift+R • Right-click highlighted text and choose "Read aloud with TextAloud" • Open the toolbar popup and type or paste any text CHOOSE YOUR VOICE • Dozens of AI voice models, each with its own set of voices • Tell the voice how to sound, like "warm and friendly" or "slow and calm" • Set the speed anywhere from 0.25x to 5x • Try a voice with the Test voice button before you use it HANDY EXTRAS • Pause, resume, or stop at any time, or cancel before the audio is ready • Price estimates get more accurate the more you use it • Drag the card anywhere on the page, and it stays there • Works on sites with their own menus for highlighted text, like eTextbook readers • Save each clip as an MP3 or WAV file to a folder you choose (optional) WHAT IT COSTS TextAloud is free. You pay OpenRouter only for what you listen to, at the price of the model you choose. That's often less than a cent per read. Tip: make a separate key just for TextAloud and set a spending limit on it. PRIVATE AND SECURE • Your API key stays in your browser and is sent only to OpenRouter • The text you choose to read is sent only to OpenRouter, to make the audio • No sign-up, no developer servers, no analytics, no tracking • Nothing is saved unless you turn on saving • Only the permissions it needs, each one explained in the privacy policy OPEN SOURCE TextAloud is free, open-source software (GPL-3.0).
