Text Field Translator
Overview
Translate and replace text directly inside input fields.
# Text Field Translator User Guide Text Field Translator is a Chrome extension that translates text directly inside web input fields, comment boxes, reply boxes, and rich text editors. It is designed for users who write comments, replies, messages, or form text in one language and want to quickly convert it into another language before posting or submitting. The extension does not publish, send, or submit anything for you. It only replaces the text in the active input field. You should always review the translated result before posting. ## Main Features - Detects the active input field, text area, comment box, reply box, or editable text area. - Shows a floating `Translate` button near the field you are using. - Translates selected text, or the full field if no text is selected. - Replaces the original text with the translated result. - Supports target language switching from the extension popup. - Supports tone switching from the extension popup. - Skips translation when the text is already in the selected target language. - Works on normal websites as well as many common comment editors. ## Supported Input Areas The extension is built to work with general web input fields, not only specific websites. It tries to support: - Single-line text inputs - Search fields - Email fields - URL fields - Telephone fields - Multi-line text areas - `contenteditable` editors - Comment boxes - Reply boxes - Rich text editors used by many websites Some complex editors may require special handling. The extension includes extra support for certain editors used by sites such as YouTube, Reddit, and X/Twitter, but the main goal is broad support for regular web input fields. Very unusual editors, canvas-based editors, or closed Shadow DOM editors may not allow browser extensions to read or replace text reliably. ## Installation To install the extension locally: 1. Open Chrome. 2. Go to `chrome://extensions`. 3. Turn on `Developer mode`. 4. Click `Load unpacked`. 5. Select the `comment-box-translator-extension` folder. 6. Refresh any web pages that were already open before loading the extension. If you update the extension files, return to `chrome://extensions`, click the reload button on the extension card, and refresh the page where you want to use it. ## Basic Usage 1. Open any website with an input field, comment box, reply box, or editable text area. 2. Click inside the field. 3. Type the text you want to translate. 4. Wait for the floating `Translate` button to appear. 5. Click `Translate`. 6. The extension translates the text and replaces it inside the same field. 7. Review the translated text before posting, sending, or submitting. The extension does not click any submit, send, reply, or post button. ## Translating Selected Text You can translate only part of the text in a field: 1. Select the specific text you want to translate. 2. Click the floating `Translate` button. 3. Only the selected text will be replaced. If no text is selected, the extension translates the entire field. ## Changing the Target Language Click the extension icon in the Chrome toolbar to open the popup. Use the `Target language` menu to choose the language you want the text translated into. Supported target languages: - English - Spanish - French - German - Japanese - Korean - Portuguese - Arabic - Chinese The setting is saved automatically. The next translation will use the selected target language. Examples: - Target language: `English`; input: `太棒了`; result may be `Awesome.` - Target language: `Spanish`; input: `太棒了`; result may be `¡Genial!` - Target language: `Chinese`; input: `This is great.`; result may be `这太棒了。` ## Changing the Tone Click the extension icon and use the `Tone` menu to choose the style of the translation. Available tones: - `Natural`: fluent and neutral wording - `Casual`: relaxed everyday wording - `Friendly`: warm and approachable wording - `Professional`: polished and formal wording - `Short and direct`: concise wording - `Warm and polite`: polite and considerate wording Tone affects how the translation is phrased, but it should preserve the original meaning. ## Same-Language Detection If the input text is already in the selected target language, the extension skips translation. Examples: - Target language is `English`, and the input is `This is great.` The extension skips translation. - Target language is `Chinese`, and the input is `太棒了`. The extension skips translation. - Target language is `Japanese`, and the input is `すごいです`. The extension skips translation. When this happens, the text is not replaced and no translation API request is needed. ## Floating Translate Button The floating button appears near the current input field when the field contains text. You can drag the button to another position on the screen. The button position is saved for the current site. If the button does not appear: 1. Click inside the input field. 2. Type some text. 3. Try selecting the text. 4. Scroll the page slightly. 5. Refresh the page. 6. Reload the extension from `chrome://extensions`. ## Common Messages ### Translated and replaced in the comment box. The translation succeeded, and the translated text was inserted into the active input field. ### The text is already English. The input text is already in the selected target language, so the extension skipped translation. The language name changes depending on your selected target language. ### Type something first, then translate it. The current field does not contain any text that can be translated. ### Click inside a comment box first, then try again. The extension could not find an active input field. Click inside the field you want to translate, then try again. ### The extension was reloaded. Refresh this tab once, then translate again. The extension was reloaded while the current web page was still open. Refresh the page and try again. ### The site editor blocked the replacement. The translation request succeeded, but the website editor did not allow the extension to replace the text automatically. Try clicking inside the field again, selecting the text manually, refreshing the page, or testing in a normal text field. ## Privacy Notes When you click `Translate`, the extension reads the text from the active input field and sends that text to the configured translation API provider. Do not translate sensitive information such as: - Passwords - Verification codes - API keys - Private tokens - Payment card numbers - Government ID numbers - Confidential business information - Personal messages you do not want processed by a third-party service The extension does not automatically publish your text. It also does not intentionally collect unrelated page content outside the active input field. If this extension is distributed publicly, the publisher should provide a clear privacy policy explaining what data is sent to the translation provider. ## Troubleshooting If the extension does not work: 1. Make sure the extension is enabled in `chrome://extensions`. 2. Reload the extension after changing files. 3. Refresh the web page after reloading the extension. 4. Make sure the input field contains text. 5. Confirm that `Target language` and `Tone` are set correctly. 6. Test in a normal `textarea` or `input` field. 7. Inspect the extension service worker from `chrome://extensions` to check API errors. ## Best Practices - Always review the translated text before posting or submitting. - For formal, legal, medical, or high-stakes content, do not rely only on automatic translation. - Try a different tone if the translation style does not fit the situation. - If the result appears in the wrong language, check the selected target language in the popup. - If the same text is already in the target language, the extension will skip translation. ## Uninstalling 1. Open `chrome://extensions`. 2. Find Text Field Translator. 3. Click `Remove`. 4. Confirm the removal. After uninstalling, the floating button and translation features will no longer appear on web pages.
