Terminal Input Keys
Overview
Terminal-style navigation and editing shortcuts while editing text on the web.
Web Emacs Keys brings familiar Linux/Readline-style text editing shortcuts to text fields and editors on the web. It is designed for Linux users who are accustomed to Emacs-style GTK or GNU Readline keybindings and want a more consistent editing experience across web applications such as ChatGPT, Gmail, and Google Chat. Supported shortcuts include: • Ctrl+A — move to the beginning of the line • Ctrl+E — move to the end of the line • Ctrl+B / Ctrl+F — move backward / forward by one character • Ctrl+P — move to the previous line • Ctrl+H — delete the previous character • Ctrl+D — delete the next character • Ctrl+U — delete to the beginning of the line • Ctrl+K — delete to the end of the line • Alt+B / Alt+F — move backward / forward by one word The extension works with standard text inputs, textareas, and many contenteditable web editors. It only intercepts supported shortcuts while you are editing text, leaving normal browser and website shortcuts untouched elsewhere. Some browser-reserved shortcuts cannot be reliably overridden. In particular, Ctrl+N and Alt+D are intentionally unsupported. On Linux with the GNOME Emacs key theme enabled, Ctrl+W can be handled natively by Chromium rather than by this extension. Web Emacs Keys does not collect, store, or transmit your browsing data or text input.
