TabZen
Overview
Track how you really use your tabs, catch duplicates before they open, and purge, group and sort what is left.
TabZen keeps tab sprawl under control by tracking how you actually use your tabs — then giving you fast, reversible ways to clean up. ━━ WHAT IT DOES ━━ USAGE TRACKING TabZen records when each tab was opened, when you last used it, and how often it is genuinely used. "Used" means real engagement: you stayed on the page past a dwell threshold, or you interacted with it (mouse, scroll, keys, selection). A cooldown keeps a tab you work in all afternoon from drowning out one you return to every day. DUPLICATE HANDLING — BEFORE THE PAGE LOADS When you open a page that is already open, TabZen can catch it *before* the duplicate is fetched and ask what you want: • Switch to the tab that already has it • Open it here anyway For a tab navigating away from a page you were reading, it also offers to switch and return that tab to where you were — so you do not lose your place. Or skip the question entirely: switch silently, or move the existing tab next to whatever spawned the duplicate. TIDY UP IN ONE CLICK • Close duplicates • Group or close stale tabs — old tabs you never actually read • Close every tab from a site, with subdomains grouped or separated (mail.google.com and chat.google.com, together or apart — your choice) Everything TabZen closes goes to a Recently Closed list you can restore from. ORGANIZE Sort by title, domain, when opened, or when last used. Merge every window into one, split a window by site, or auto-group by domain with a stable colour per site. MOST VISITED See which sites you actually use over the last 7 or 30 days, ranked by real visits rather than by how many tabs happen to be open, with a drill-down to the individual pages. ━━ PRIVACY ━━ TabZen makes no network requests. None. Every byte it records stays in your browser profile, and Options → Your data deletes all of it in one click. Page access is optional and off by default — TabZen works without it, measuring foreground time instead of interaction, and asking about duplicates with its own page and desktop notifications. Turn it on only if you want activity tracking. ━━ CONTROL ━━ • A pause switch stops everything automatically, without uninstalling • Duplicate matching strictness is configurable, including which sites use #fragments for routing and which sites to never deduplicate • Pinned tabs, audible tabs and grouped tabs are protected from purging by default • Tabs restored from a previous session are never purged on age alone, since Chrome does not report their real age • Dry-run mode logs what would close without closing anything
