Overview

Local terminal sessions that behave like native Chrome tabs

Your terminal, right alongside the rest of your work. TabTerm brings real Mac terminal sessions into Chrome tabs. Keep a shell next to your documentation, a development server beside its browser preview, or a coding tool alongside the project you are working on. Organize your terminals with the same tabs, windows, pins, and groups you already use in Chrome. KEEP YOUR PLACE Closing a tab does not have to mean losing your terminal. TabTerm's local companion keeps your sessions running independently of Chrome. Reopen a workspace and return to its pane layout, running processes, and terminal screens, even an editor with an unsaved file. Restart Chrome and reconnect while the companion continues running on your Mac. BUILD A WORKSPACE THAT FITS THE TASK Split a terminal tab horizontally or vertically to work in several panes at once. Keep a server, a shell, and an editor visible together. Move panes between terminal tabs, bring sessions together into one workspace, or detach a pane into its own tab. Save layouts as templates so you can return to a familiar arrangement. Include commands for individual panes, ready at the prompt for you to review and run. FIND WHAT MATTERS IN YOUR OUTPUT Search terminal scrollback, highlight useful text, and add markers to places you want to return to. Name sessions so they are easy to recognize. Whether you are following a build, reading logs, or working through a long command's output, keep the useful parts within reach. REUSE THE COMMANDS YOU NEED Open the command menu to find recent commands and keep favorites close at hand. Bring a command back to the prompt without digging through a long shell history. Copy and paste with familiar Mac shortcuts, or drag a file into a terminal to insert its path. WORK WITH YOUR LOCAL DEVELOPMENT TOOLS See services listening on local ports and open a development server in a browser tab. Send selected text or a link from a webpage to a terminal through an explicit right-click action. The text is placed at the prompt for you to review before running it. Receive notifications when commands finish. Optional integrations with supported coding tools can also show when they are working, finished, or waiting for your input, so a hidden terminal tab is easier to keep track of. LOCAL BY DESIGN Your shells and terminal data stay on your Mac. TabTerm has no account system, advertising, analytics, or telemetry. The extension connects to its local companion and local services you choose to open. Programs you run in the terminal can access the network as they would in any other terminal. TabTerm is free and open source. REQUIREMENTS AND SETUP TabTerm requires macOS 13 or newer, Chrome 120 or newer, and the separately installed TabTerm companion program. The extension is the terminal interface. The companion runs your shells on your Mac. The companion is currently built from source. Setup requires Node.js 22 or newer and Xcode Command Line Tools.
