Overview

Automatically rename, group, and tidy up stale browser tabs based on simple rules you define.

TabRules automatically renames, groups, and cleans up your browser tabs — using simple rules you set once and forget. THREE THINGS IT DOES - Rename tabs — find-and-replace or fully rewrite a tab's title based on its URL (domain, contains, or regex match). Turn "Inbox (24) - Gmail" into "Email," every time. - Group tabs — automatically sort matching tabs into named, color-coded Chrome tab groups. Point it at your CRM, ticketing tool, or client sites and never manually group again. - Clean up stale tabs — set a rule like "group tabs I haven't touched in 3+ days," and TabRules quietly collects them into a "Stale" group so your window stops looking like 40 tabs of chaos. WHY WE BUILT THIS Tab Modifier was the most popular tool for renaming and grouping tabs by rule, with tens of thousands of users — until it was removed from the Chrome Web Store. We wanted the same core idea, done cleanly, with staleness handling added on top since forgotten tabs are half the problem. BUILT TO BE TRUSTED - Minimal permissions — TabRules only asks for what the three features above actually need. - 100% local — rules and activity tracking are stored in your browser's local storage. Nothing is ever sent to a server. There is no server. - No tracking, no analytics, no ads. - Open, readable source code — nothing minified or obfuscated. HOW IT WORKS Open the TabRules options page, add a rule, and pick a rule type: 1. Rename — match a URL, then find/replace or fully rewrite the tab title. 2. Group — match a URL, then place matching tabs into a named, colored group. 3. Stale — set a day threshold; tabs untouched that long get swept into a group automatically (checked every 30 minutes, or on demand from the toolbar popup). Free to use, with no rule limits in this initial release.
