Overview

Auto-sleep inactive tabs on your schedule with per-site rules. Tab sleeping, with you in control. 100% on-device.

Too many tabs slowing your browser down? TabNap puts background tabs to sleep after a timer you choose, so they stop using memory and CPU. A sleeping tab stays in your tab strip and wakes the moment you click it. Unlike the built-in tab discarding, you decide exactly what sleeps and when. YOUR TIMER • Sleep background tabs after 3 minutes, 15 minutes, an hour, a day, or any custom time • The countdown starts when you leave a tab, not when you opened it, so a tab you just read is never slept a few seconds later PER-SITE RULES • "Never sleep" for sites you always want ready, like mail, chat or a design tool • A custom timer per site, for example 5 minutes for news sites • Rules cover subdomains, and when two rules overlap the more specific one wins • Right-click any page and choose "Never sleep this site" PROTECTIONS • Pinned tabs and tabs playing audio stay awake (each can be turned off) • Auto-sleep pauses while a download is running • When a protection ends (you pause a video, unpin a tab) the tab gets a full fresh timer instead of sleeping right away ONE-CLICK CONTROL • Toolbar popup listing every tab with its state: awake, sleeping, pinned, playing, kept • Sleep or wake any single tab, sleep all other tabs, or wake everything • Badge shows how many tabs are sleeping • Keyboard shortcuts: Alt+Shift+S sleeps other tabs, Alt+Shift+Z sleeps the current tab (change them at chrome://extensions/shortcuts) PRIVATE BY DESIGN • Runs entirely on your device: no accounts, no servers, no analytics, no ads • Nothing about your tabs or browsing ever leaves your browser • Your settings and rules sync between your computers through your own Chrome profile, if you use Chrome sync Memory savings shown in the popup are rough estimates; browsers don't let extensions measure real per-tab memory.
