Overview

Shows a live tab counter and caps how many tabs can be open. Set by school administrators; not adjustable by the user.

TabLimit caps how many browser tabs a student can have open at once, and shows a live tab counter on the toolbar that changes color as the count climbs. Built for managed school Chromebooks. The limit lives in Google Admin policy, not in a settings page — there is no options screen, so students cannot raise the limit or work around it. HOW IT WORKS A number on the toolbar icon shows how many tabs are open. With the default limit of 15: - 1 to 7 tabs: green - 8 to 10 tabs: lime - 11 to 14 tabs: amber - 15 tabs: red Nothing below the limit interrupts the student. The color is the only signal. When a student at the limit tries to open another tab, that tab closes and a notification explains why. Tabs the student already had open are never closed. Only the newly opened tab is blocked, so no work is lost. Tabs restored at startup come back intact. The count covers all windows, so opening a second window is not a way around the limit. FOR ADMINISTRATORS Force-install the extension to your student OU and enable "Pin to browser toolbar" so the counter is visible. With no policy set, the defaults above apply. To change them, use "Policy for extensions" on the extension's row in the Admin console: { "maxTabs": { "Value": 15 }, "greenMax": { "Value": 7 }, "yellowGreenMax": { "Value": 10 }, "amberMax": { "Value": 14 } } Setting only maxTabs derives the color bands automatically at roughly 45, 67, and 93 percent of the limit. Push different values to different OUs to run a lower limit for younger grades. Other options: countPinnedTabs (default false), showBadge (default true), and exemptUrlPrefixes, which protects sign-in and print flows from being closed at the limit.
