Make today's web feel historic in one click. Tab Time Machine is a Chrome extension for visual web-era time travel. It is not a closed-tab restore or session manager. Open a normal webpage, click the extension, and choose a look: Google-style 1998, Yahoo-style 1996, YouTube-style 2005, Wiki-style 2004, or Quiet Reader. Why people install it - It changes only the tab you are viewing. - Turn off brings the page back immediately. - It uses no host permissions. - It has no project backend and no in-extension analytics. - It can open real Internet Archive snapshots for selected famous sites after you click. Real old pages For supported famous sites, Tab Time Machine shows ready old-copy buttons. Google 1998, Yahoo 1996, and YouTube 2005 proof screenshots are captured from exact Internet Archive CDX timestamps. The extension is an unofficial educational tool and is not affiliated with Internet Archive or the sites shown. Authentic filters The named filters are visual approximations based on recognizable historical page patterns: sparse 1998 search, dense 1996 directory, early video portal, and plain encyclopedia layouts. They do not recreate official services, logos, accounts, search results, or videos. Privacy The extension does not collect analytics, create accounts, run ads, store browsing history, or send page contents to a project backend. It uses activeTab and scripting only after you click the extension. It has no persistent host permissions. Internet Archive opens only after you click Find old copy or a saved-copy button. Limitations The filters are visual approximations, not a perfect historical reconstruction engine. Some modern app pages may keep parts of their original look. Chrome internal pages, extension pages, PDFs, empty tabs, and some protected pages cannot be changed. Internet Archive results depend on what archived pages are available.
