Overview

Persistently rename browser tabs by exact URL or URL prefix.

Give any tab a name of your own, and keep it. Too many tabs called "Untitled document", "Inbox (12)" or "Pull request #4821"? Rename them to something you recognize at a glance. The name persists through reloads, closing and reopening the tab, and browser restarts. It even holds on pages that keep rewriting their own title. HOW TO RENAME A TAB • Click the Tab Renamer icon, type a name and press Enter. • Or press Ctrl+Shift+E. You can change the shortcut at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. • Or right-click the page and choose "Rename this tab…". To undo, choose "Reset to original" or save an empty name. ONE PAGE, OR A WHOLE SECTION • This page only: the name applies to that exact address. • All pages under: one rule such as github.com/your-org/your-repo/* names every page below it. If several renames match a page, the exact one wins, then the longest prefix. EVERYTHING IN ONE PLACE The manage page lists every rename. Add renames without opening the page, search, remove, clear all, and back up or restore your renames as a JSON file. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Your renames are stored only in your browser, on this computer. Nothing is sent anywhere: no account, no analytics, no tracking. ABOUT THE PERMISSIONS Chrome warns that the extension can "read and change all your data on all websites". Tab Renamer needs this to put your title back each time a page loads, on whichever sites you choose. It only reads the page address, to look up your rename, and only changes the page title. GOOD TO KNOW • Chrome doesn't let extensions change its own pages (chrome://) or the Chrome Web Store. • To rename local files (file://), turn on "Allow access to file URLs" in the extension's details.
