Overview

Send tabs you don't use into hibernation to save memory.

Tab Nap automatically puts inactive tabs to sleep to help reduce Chrome's memory use. Your tabs stay available, and you can return to them when you need them. Choose how your tabs nap: • Built-in mode uses Chrome's native tab unloading. Tabs keep their title and icon and reload when you open them. • Sleep page mode replaces the page with a lightweight sleep screen. Choose a faded site icon or a sleeping capybara for the tab. Click the screen to restore the page, or enable automatic wake-up when you open the tab. Control when tabs go to sleep: • Set an inactivity timeout from 1 to 120 minutes; the default is 15 minutes. • Keep selected websites or individual pages awake by excluding them from automatic napping. • Automatic napping skips active tabs and tabs currently playing audio. • Use Nap This Tab, Nap All, and Wake All for manual control. • See how many tabs are currently napping in the extension popup. • In Sleep page mode, adjust the site icon's opacity. The default is 45%, and icon preferences apply immediately to already sleeping tabs. Built-in mode uses Chrome's own tab icon display. Privacy: Tab Nap processes tab addresses, titles, tab activity timestamps, and your settings locally in your browser to decide which tabs to put to sleep and to restore sleeping pages. It has no analytics and does not send this data to the developer or an analytics service. Permissions: • tabs — access tab addresses and titles for website/page exclusions and sleeping-page restoration. • storage — keep your preferences, exclusions, activity timestamps, and sleeping-page recovery information locally. • alarms — periodically check for inactive tabs. • favicon — display the site's icon inside the sleep screen and optionally use a faded copy in its tab. Sleeping tabs reload their pages when restored. Save important work before manually putting a tab to sleep.
