Tab Counter for Google Chrome™ Know exactly how many tabs you have open — at a glance, all the time. If you are the kind of person who opens a tab for every idea, every article you swear you will read later, and every half-finished task, you already know the feeling: somewhere past the point where favicons stop being readable, your browser turns into a wall of tiny squares. Tab Counter puts a real number back on that wall. It shows a live count directly on your toolbar icon and opens a compact dashboard with the six statistics that actually tell you how you browse. WHAT YOU GET A live badge on the toolbar. The number on the extension icon is the total count of tabs open across every one of your Chrome windows, and it updates the instant you open or close a tab, or open or close an entire window. Glance at the toolbar and you know where you stand. Six statistics in one click. Open the popup for a clean grid of numbers: • Open windows — how many Chrome windows you currently have running. • Open tabs — the total across all of those windows combined. • Current window open tabs — how many are in the window you are looking at right now, so you can tell a focused window from a runaway one. • Current window pinned tabs — how many of those are pinned, so your permanent tabs are counted separately from the temporary pile. • All-time tabs — a cumulative lifetime counter of every tab you have opened since installing. Most people are surprised after a few weeks. • Max concurrent tabs — your personal record for the most tabs open at the same time. A high-water mark, and for some of us a warning sign. Reset whatever you want. The all-time counter and the max concurrent record each have their own reset link. Starting a new project, or a new attempt at tab discipline? Zero out the numbers you care about and leave the rest alone. MAKE IT YOURS Custom badge colors. The default badge is white text on red, deliberately hard to ignore. If you want something calmer, pick any badge background and text color with the two built-in color pickers. Your choice is saved and applied immediately. Light and dark themes. The popup ships with both, and a single toggle switches between them. On first run it follows your system appearance preference automatically, so if your computer is in dark mode, so is the extension. Your preference is remembered after that. Clean, readable design. The dashboard is built to be scanned in under a second — large numbers, quiet labels, no clutter, no advertisements, no upsell wall between you and your own statistics. PRIVACY: THE PART WORTH READING Most tab-related extensions ask for the "tabs" permission — the one that produces the alarming "Read your browsing history" warning at install time. Tab Counter does not ask for it. Counting does not require it. This extension declares exactly two permissions: • storage — to save your counters, your badge colors, and your theme choice on your own computer. • alarms — to keep the background service worker alive so the count stays accurate. That is the entire list. Because the "tabs" permission is absent, Chrome does not give this extension access to the URLs, page titles, or favicons of your tabs. It literally cannot see what you are browsing. It counts tabs; it does not read them. There are no network requests of any kind. No analytics, no telemetry, no tracking pixels, no external scripts, no accounts, no sign-up. Every number is calculated and stored locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded anywhere. It works fully offline, exactly the same whether you are connected or not. BUILT PROPERLY Tab Counter is built on Manifest V3, Chrome's current extension platform, using an event-driven service worker rather than a permanently running background page. It is lightweight, does not inject scripts into the pages you visit, and does not slow down browsing. Counts are verified on a short interval, so if Chrome suspends the background worker, your numbers correct themselves rather than silently drifting out of date.
