Overview

Group tabs by site, collapse or ungroup them, merge windows, and free RAM per action - with your own domain rules.

Tab Cleaner tidies up a messy Chrome window in one click. It sorts your tabs into groups by website, collapses those groups so the tab strip is readable again, and can unload tabs you are not using to free memory - without closing them. WHAT IT DOES • Group all tabs - sorts every tab by website and collapses the groups. Three YouTube tabs become one "YouTube" group, two GitHub tabs become "GitHub". • Collapse YouTube - the same thing, but only for YouTube tabs. • Ungroup all - breaks every group in the window back apart. Your tabs stay open, in the same order. • Custom groups - add any site you like and pick a colour for it. One click collapses those tabs. • Merge windows - pulls the tabs from every Chrome window into the one you are in. Groups arrive whole and pinned tabs stay pinned. • Free RAM - each action has its own RAM switch. Flip it and those tabs are unloaded from memory as well. Click a tab and it loads straight back. WHAT IT LEAVES ALONE Tab Cleaner never closes a tab. It skips the tab you are looking at, pinned tabs, tabs playing sound, and pages where losing your place would hurt - Google Docs, Gmail, Notion and Figma are never unloaded. GROUP COLOURS Colours come from the sites themselves. Tab Cleaner reads the icon Chrome has already saved for a site and picks the closest group colour, so YouTube comes out red and Spotify green. It never contacts the website to do this. You can always set your own colour with a custom group. ABOUT THE BOOKMARKS BAR Chrome pins every new tab group to the bookmarks bar by itself. That is a Chrome setting, not something this extension does - a group you create by hand behaves exactly the same way, and no extension is allowed to change it. To switch it off: 1. Open chrome://settings/appearance 2. Turn off "Automatically pin new tab groups" Tab Cleaner also reuses a group it has already made instead of creating a new one, and its "Ungroup all" button removes a group together with its chip. PRIVACY Everything happens on your device. Tab Cleaner reads tab addresses only to work out which site a tab belongs to. It does not read the content of pages, does not inject anything into websites, does not collect analytics, and does not send your data anywhere. FEEDBACK Found a bug or have an idea? There is a "Send feedback" link at the bottom of the popup.
