Overview

Moves the artist credit off an icon SVG's canvas and into its metadata, so the file still carries it but never draws it.

SVG Credit Keeper moves the artist credit out of an icon's artwork and into the file's metadata. Icons downloaded from The Noun Project carry the credit drawn into the picture itself: a line of 5px text sitting inside the same viewBox as the drawing. Scale the icon and the credit scales with it. You can't restyle it, can't translate it, and can't move it into a caption where it belongs, so it sits in a 25%-tall empty band under the artwork that you end up cropping by hand every single time. This adds a "Download SVG · credit in metadata" button underneath the site's own download button on icon pages. One click saves the icon with: • the credit lifted off the canvas • that same credit written back as <desc> and standard CC-REL <metadata>: dc:creator, dc:rights and dc:source • the viewBox fitted to the actual drawing, the way "export selection" out of Illustrator does THE CREDIT IS PRESERVED, NOT DELETED That's the whole point. Nothing gets thrown away; the credit moves into the part of the file built to hold exactly this information, in the same CC-REL format Inkscape and creativecommons.org already write, so other software reads it back. Moving a credit doesn't waive it. Most Noun Project icons ship under CC BY, which asks you to credit the artist wherever the icon ends up. CC BY has never required that credit to be drawn inside the image; §4(c) accepts it "in any reasonable manner", so a colophon, an about page or a CREDITS file all satisfy it. The workflow this exists for: credit off the canvas, credit into the metadata, credit into your colophon. If you're not attributing the artist somewhere, this doesn't fix that and doesn't claim to. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO • It doesn't remove your obligation to credit the artist. • It doesn't touch the site's own Download SVG button, which still hands you their file exactly as served. • It doesn't touch Download PNG. • It bypasses no paywall, subscription check or access control. It reads the same file the page already sent your browser. ALSO INCLUDED The toolbar icon opens a drop-file panel running the same conversion on SVGs already sitting on your disk, no website required. PRIVACY Nothing collected. No analytics, no telemetry, no server, no account, no ads. Your browser does the work locally and the files never leave it. Zero API permissions, and it runs on exactly one site. OPEN SOURCE MIT licensed, and small enough to read in one sitting: https://github.com/RavelBuilds/svg-credit-keeper Free, with no paid tier and no upsell. NOTE ON SVG OPTIMISERS SVGO strips <metadata> and <desc> by default. Run it after this without switching off removeMetadata and removeDesc and you've thrown the credit away again.
