Overview
Select text on any page to translate it to Japanese, hear it, and save it as a flashcard in susumenihongo.app.
Turn anything you read into Japanese study material. Select text on any web page and a small bar appears next to it. Translate it, hear it spoken, ask for a grammar breakdown, or save it as a flashcard in your susumenihongo.app deck — without leaving the page. FOUR BUTTONS, AND YOU ALWAYS KNOW WHICH ONE COSTS YOU SOMETHING 訳 Translate — a translation, the reading in romaji, and dictionary senses. Free. 🔊 Listen — the sentence spoken in Japanese. Free. If Google's voice is unavailable it falls back to your system voice and tells you it did; only if your system has no Japanese voice either does it offer the AI voice, and even then you have to press it. ✦ AI — a reading plus a per-word grammar breakdown from the AI provider you chose in susumenihongo.app (Google Gemini, OpenRouter, Anthropic or OpenAI), using your own API key. This is the only button that spends a request, and nothing ever escalates to it on its own: if a free translation fails, the panel says so and waits for you to press AI yourself. + Save card — files it in your deck. Cards queue on your device and land the next time you open susumenihongo.app, so saving works with no app tab open. IT STAYS OUT OF YOUR WAY • Turn off the automatic pop-up and open the bar with a keyboard shortcut you choose yourself. The shortcut also works on text you selected with the keyboard. • Choose which side of the selection it opens on, or pin it to the edge of the window so it never covers what you are reading. • Compact mode shows a single small button that opens the full bar only when you want it. • Switch it off on any site with one click from the toolbar, or keep a list of sites it never runs on. • Copy the Japanese, the reading and the meaning together, or pin the panel so it survives a click on the page. WHAT IT NEEDS, AND WHY The extension has no account and no API keys of its own. It reads the AI provider, API key and language you already saved in susumenihongo.app and keeps them on your own machine. Translation and audio go to Google's public endpoints. There is no analytics, no advertising and no tracking of any kind. It reads nothing from a page until you select text there. Nothing you select is stored on a server of ours, because there is no such server: everything the extension does happens either in your browser or against Google's own APIs and the AI provider you chose. REQUIREMENTS Nothing to sign up for. Translate, Listen and Save card work out of the box; saved cards land in your deck the next time you open susumenihongo.app, which needs no account either. For the AI grammar breakdown, add your own API key for Google Gemini, OpenRouter, Anthropic or OpenAI in susumenihongo.app (the AI voice always uses Gemini).
