Overview

Select any word on any website and its Wikipedia summary appears next to it. Search Wikipedia in the box, star articles.

Select a word on any website — or double-click it — and its Wikipedia summary appears next to it. Add articles to your favorites list. Use the search field in the box — all inside the Wikipedia preview box. Open source, no tracking, no account. WHAT YOU GET • A summary box with the first lines of the Wikipedia article, its thumbnail image and a link to the full page. • A search field when the answer is not clear. If nothing was found, if the word leads to a "may refer to" disambiguation page, or if the match is only a near miss, the box offers a Wikipedia search instead of giving up. Pick a title from the results and read it in the same box. • Favorites. Star an article and find it again later from the list inside the box. Remove one, or all of them, and put them back if you change your mind. • It follows the language of the page you are on, with English as the fallback. Right-to-left scripts included. • Settings: box width, length of the summary, font size, never show images, open the Wikipedia link in the same tab, always show the search field, and an "only while Alt key is held" mode so that selecting text to copy it does not open a box. SWITCHING IT OFF Click the toolbar button to turn the preview off everywhere, or right-click it to turn it off for one website only. Alt+Shift+W and Alt+Shift+S do the same from the keyboard. Sites you have switched off are listed in the options page, so you can switch them back on there. QUIET AND FRUGAL A short debounce, a length check and a 120-entry cache keep a term at one request or none. A word you look up twice costs nothing the second time, and a word that is not on Wikipedia is only ever looked up once. IT STAYS OUT OF THE WAY The box lives in a closed shadow root, so a website's CSS and scripts cannot reach into it — and it cannot disturb the website either. PRIVACY No accounts, no analytics, no server of ours. The only requests go to Wikipedia. Nothing you select is ever sent to us. Open source under the GPL v3. Also available for Firefox.
