Subtitle Study – Learn Languages with Videos
Overview
Learn English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and more with YouTube, Netflix and Prime Video subtitles: dual subs, word lookup, AI help.
Turn the videos you love into language lessons. Subtitle Study is a Chrome extension for learning English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and more with the subtitles of YouTube, streaming services and news sites. ■ Features • Dual subtitles: see the subtitles in the language you are learning together with a translation. Show, blur or hide the translation. • Click any word: get its meaning, meanings by part of speech, reading (pinyin, romanization) and pronunciation. Drag across words to look up a phrase. • Line-by-line replay: A / S / D jump to the previous line, replay the current one, or go to the next. Optional auto-pause after each line. • Subtitle list: see every line and its translation, and click to jump to that scene. • Word list and review: save words and whole lines with their translation, example sentence and a link back to the scene. Review them with spaced-repetition flashcards, or export to Anki. • Ask Gemini: ask Gemini on the web about the nuance of the current line — no API key needed. In the word list, the explanation is saved so you can read it any time. • AI translation (optional): add your own API key (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok) for natural translations that understand the scene. • Interface in 14 languages, including right-to-left Persian. ■ Where it works YouTube and Netflix, plus many other streaming services and news sites with subtitles (beta). Turn on the video's subtitles before playing. ■ How to use Click the extension icon and choose the language you are learning and the language to translate into. Play a video on a supported service. Click words in the subtitles to look them up, and save the words and lines you want to remember. ■ Pricing All features are free today. A paid Pro version with extra features is planned for the future; if you install before then, the features available today stay free for you. ■ Privacy Your word list, settings and API keys stay in your browser and are never sent to the developer. For translation, subtitle lines and looked-up words are sent to a translation service (Google Translate, or the AI service you choose). Subtitle Study is not affiliated with any video service. It has no feature to download or save videos or subtitles.
