Subtitle Focus – Easy-Read Captions
Overview
Bolds the start of each word in video subtitles so they're easier to follow. Runs in your browser; no data collected.
Subtitle Focus makes video subtitles easier to follow by bolding the first few letters of each word. The bold start gives your eyes an anchor, so it's easier to keep your place in a line while the video keeps moving. People like it for watching shows in a second language, for fast dialogue, and for long subtitle lines that are tiring to read. It's a reading-comfort option: try it, and keep it if it suits you. HOW IT WORKS • Turn on subtitles (CC) in your video player as usual. • Subtitle Focus finds the subtitle text on the page and restyles it straight away. • The toolbar icon turns purple when it's working on the current tab. MAKE IT YOURS • 9 reading styles: Combined Smart, Bold Start, Adaptive Bold Start, Phrase Chunking, Punctuation Chunking, Word Grouping, Reading-Speed Adaptive, Dynamic Chunk Size and Smart Line Breaking. • Light, normal or strong emphasis, and a bold weight of 600, 700 or 800. • Your own colours for the text, the background behind it and the bold letters. • Turn it off for any website with one switch. WHERE IT WORKS It works on websites whose video players show subtitles as text on the page. It has built-in support for YouTube and for players built with Video.js, JW Player, Plyr and Shaka Player, and a smart detector looks for captions in other players too. It can't change subtitles that are drawn into the video picture itself (burned-in subtitles, or some protected streaming services), because there is no text to restyle. The popup tells you when that's the case. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai and Indic scripts are left as they are, because bolding the start of a word doesn't suit those writing systems. PRIVATE BY DESIGN • Runs entirely in your browser. • Collects no data. Nothing you watch or read is saved or sent anywhere. • No account, no ads, no tracking. Privacy policy: https://github.com/ZillionnLTD/subtitle-focus-support/blob/main/PRIVACY.md PERMISSIONS, EXPLAINED • "Read and change all your data on all websites": subtitles can appear on any site, so the extension needs to run wherever you watch video. It only touches subtitle text, and only once a video is playing. • "Storage": to remember your settings. FREE, WITH AN OPTIONAL TIP JAR Subtitle Focus is free, with every feature included.
