Overview

Subtitles come after you listen, not before. Pause and loop a line, then type it back. Korean & English. Netflix, YouTube, Viki.

Hear it first. Read it after. SubLater delays subtitles (or hides them until you press a key), so you actually train your listening instead of reading along. Two training modes — Fixed delay (2.0s on the free tier; Pro adjusts it 0–5s, set 0 for real-time dual subs) or Reveal mode (Pro; press S to check). Line-by-line tools — A/D jump between lines, R replays, L loops endlessly, P auto-pauses at the end of each line. Dual-language subtitles — The translation appears below, in sync (YouTube can auto-translate; other sites use the subtitle tracks the player already offers). Learning Korean? Turn on Korean subtitles and English appears below (great for K-dramas). Stuck on a word? Just hover (NEW) — Instant definitions for 34,000+ English words, fully on-device. Detects phrasal verbs and idioms ("look it up", "be able to"); the phrasal-verb & idiom notes are Pro. AI context notes explain why the word means what it means in this scene, powered by Chrome's built-in on-device AI (supported browsers). Note: definitions and phrasal-verb notes are written in Korean — this feature is built for Korean speakers learning English. AI context notes are in Korean on Korean-language browsers, in English otherwise. Prove you heard it (NEW) — Dictation (W): type what you heard and get instant scoring, two-stage hints, 0.7x slow replay, and a fanfare at 90+. Ladder replay (G, Pro): re-listen to one line in three steps — no subs, target language only, then translation. Missed lines are auto-collected for review (V) and Anki export (Pro). Full 14-day trial, free forever after — The app never locks you out. Subtitle delay (2.0s), dual subs, line navigation, auto-pause, hover definitions, and linking underlines stay free forever (dictation: 10/day, AI explanations: 20/day, 50 saved lines). Pro ($8.99/mo or $49.99/yr): adjustable delay (0–5s), Reveal mode, sound line, unlimited dictation and AI explanations, 5,000 saved lines, Anki export, phrasal-verb & idiom notes, ladder replay. Works on: Netflix, Coupang Play, Disney+, YouTube (with auto-translation), Viki. Plus: subtitle size control, mouse control bar, IME-independent hotkeys (press / while watching to see them all). Which languages? SubLater was built for Korean speakers learning English, and it now works the other way round too. Before you install, here is exactly what you get: · Any subtitle language — subtitle delay, Reveal mode (Pro), line navigation (A/D/R/L), auto-pause, saved lines. · Korean subtitles — hover a word for its English meaning and how it actually sounds, with a sound-based romanization. The sound line (Pro) romanizes the whole line the way it is spoken. · English subtitles — hover definitions, phrasal-verb notes, linking underlines and the sound line are written in Korean; that part is made for Korean speakers learning English. · Dual subtitles pair your subtitle track with a Korean one — or with English if your subtitles are Korean. Other pairings (for example Japanese + English) are not supported yet, and the second line will not appear if the title has no Korean track. · Dictation scoring supports English and Korean only. No viewing data is ever sent to us or anyone else. Subtitle text and saved lines never leave your device. The one thing that does leave your device is the email address you enter to unlock Pro — and only if you enter one. It is used solely to check whether that address has an active subscription, and we store it on no server of ours (it stays on your device until you disconnect it). If you never enter an email, SubLater never contacts our server or any third party. The only other requests it makes are to the streaming service you are already watching, to load that service's own subtitle files. When you uninstall, Chrome opens our short survey page; its address carries a few coarse values (language, version, day counts) that cannot identify you — see the privacy policy. SubLater is an independent product, not affiliated with Netflix, Coupang Play, Disney+, YouTube, or Viki. Each service requires your own subscription. ――――――――――――――――――― v0.18.0 update [The dictionary doubled] · Common words almost never come back empty now — 16,100 new Korean definitions, covering 96% of the top 50,000 subtitle words (was 63%). · Irregular past forms (flung, swung), accented words (jalapeño, café, señor) and forms like H2O and A.I. now resolve. [Idioms & set phrases: 139 → 3,100 (Pro)] · Phrases you cannot work out from the individual words: made a pass at · let him off the hook. · Now covering work, hospital, courtroom, school, travel, phone and sports situations that fill sitcoms. · Set conversational phrases too: good to know, makes sense, fine by me, what's up. · Objects in the middle are matched too — give me a hand and give her a hand resolve to the same entry. [Hover a word, hear how it sounds] · Every word popup now shows the sound as well: water → 워러r, comfortable → 컴f어r러블. · Ordinary words without a linking underline now show how they actually sound. [One spelling for one sound] · The hover popup and the sound line could spell the same phrase two different ways. how does this now reads 하러z이스 in both. · 17 spellings were corrected against our reference pronunciation data, including will you and what are you. [Subtitles that are not English or Korean] · Dictation gave a perfect score for an empty answer on Japanese and Chinese subtitles. It now says scoring is not supported instead. · The first hint revealed the whole answer. · Typing one correct letter auto-filled the entire line. · English pronunciation hints appeared on Spanish and French subtitles — linking underlines and the sound line now require an English track. ――――――――――――――――――― v0.19.0 [Korean word meanings, for English speakers] · Hover a word in Korean subtitles to see its English meaning. 맞습니까 → 맞다 · be correct · Inflected forms are resolved too — 걸어서 finds 걷다, 더워서 finds 덥다 · 50,000 headwords from the National Institute of Korean Language, looked up on your device [Hover a Korean word to hear how it actually sounds] · Hovering a word in Korean subtitles shows the real pronunciation and a romanization. 뜻으로 → 뜨스로 → tteu-seu-ro · Not spelling-based romanization — it follows the sound. 국물은 is gung-mu-reun, not guk-mul-eun [Drag to copy a subtitle line] · Subtitles can now be selected and copied on Netflix too · Selection now starts from the gaps between words too · The Copy line button in the word popup copies just the original line ――――――――――――――――――― v0.19.1 [Fixes] · The free trial no longer restarts when the extension is removed and installed again · Fixed the A key (previous line) reporting "this is the first line" on Disney+ — the cause was a partially downloaded subtitle list being reused [Privacy] · The privacy policy now spells out where the trial start date is stored. That date is never sent to us ――――――――――――――――――― v0.19.2 [A name people actually search for] · The extension name and summary changed — "shadowing" instead of "subtitle delay" [Sound spelling touch-ups] · Fixed Korean sound spellings that collided with real Korean words — hurry, sorry, era ――――――――――――――――――― v0.19.3 [When another subtitle extension gets in the way — press X] · If another extension also draws dual subtitles, you end up with two sets stacked on the video. · Press X while watching and we hide its subtitles on screen. · We hide them, we do not switch the extension off — press X again and they come straight back. · The same note now appears on the welcome screen. [A name people actually search for] · Updated the English name and summary. The Korean listing is unchanged from v0.19.2. ――――――――――――――――――― v0.19.6 [Fixed the places where the first run went silent] · If the player's subtitles are off, SubLater now says so ("turn on subtitles" — on YouTube when CC is off, elsewhere after a minute with no subtitles) — before, it waited without a word · The first tip only appears after a subtitle line has actually been captured · If you're delaying Korean subtitles on a Korean-language browser, it suggests switching to English once · The first time you play after the 14-day trial ends, it tells you once that you're on the free tier · The setup page adds a "Try it on YouTube (CC)" button and one line: it only works while subtitles are on [Privacy] · The uninstall survey address now carries four coarse values (version, days since first install, days subtitles ran, intro step). The privacy policy spells this out; nothing in it identifies you ――――――――――――――――――― v0.19.10 update [When you click the icon and nothing happens] · If the tab was opened before you installed SubLater, the popup now says "Reload this tab" and reloads it with one button · On pages where SubLater doesn't run, it tells you where it does: Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Coupang Play and Viki ――――――――――――――――――― v0.19.11 update [Fixed] · The rating prompt's buttons didn't respond on some players (e.g. Netflix). The prompt now appears at the top of the video, so it no longer covers the subtitles ――――――――――――――――――― v0.19.12 update [Fixed] · Dictation: two-line subtitles typed correctly were marked wrong, and typing stalled on leading "-" / ">>" or accented letters · The rating prompt could come back after pressing "Not now" · Switching modes from the popup could leave one subtitle line stuck on screen · YouTube's Shift shortcuts (previous video, etc.) are no longer intercepted ――――――――――――――――――― v0.19.13 update [Fixed] · The rating prompt no longer reappears on every video (at most once a day) · During YouTube and Coupang Play ads, line jump, replay and dictation no longer move the ad's playback position or save the ad's captions (during an ad you just get a short notice) · On non-US keyboard layouts such as French (AZERTY) and German (QWERTZ), shortcuts now follow the letter printed on the key (they still work whichever input language is active) · Holding down a shortcut key no longer repeats the action many times · Dictation: speaker names ("JOHN:", "(Minsu)") and sound cues ("(chuckles)") are no longer part of the answer · YouTube's "Click ⚙ for settings" notice no longer shows up in your subtitles or Saved lines · The same line from the same video no longer piles up as duplicates in Saved lines · The last lines before a video ends now appear with your delay · Notices no longer vanish before you can read them · Disney+: the same line no longer shows twice right after switching subtitle language · Disney+, Coupang Play and Viki: "&" and "<" no longer show up as "&" and "<" · Korean word meanings no longer show stray codes like "'" (e.g. 어머니 now reads "mother; ma'am") · The sound line no longer spells out [Music] or speaker names · Korean words: the sound and romanization (hover popup and sound line) now link a double final consonant in the right order (e.g. 읽어요 → il-geo-yo) · Korean sound spelling now follows standard pronunciation (e.g. 닫혔어요 → 다처써요) · Punctuation in Arabic and Hebrew subtitles now sits on the correct side · Early users (installed before 0.17) no longer see adjustable delay and Reveal mode listed as Pro in the popup (you keep both for free) · Windows high-contrast mode: the popup's on/off switches and the popup and Saved lines page buttons are now visible · When the page is zoomed in a lot or the window is short, the dictation panel no longer gets cut off at the top [Changed] · Now works on YouTube live and past-live share links (youtube.com/live/…) · SubLater now tells you when a YouTube video has no captions · You can undo deleting a saved line · When an English subtitle has a Korean translation line under it, you can now hover the Korean words too (meaning, sound and romanization) ――――――――――――――――――― v0.19.14 update [Fixed] · Coupang Play: after replaying a line in dictation, the translation line could slip one line behind and show the previous line's translation ――――――――――――――――――― v0.19.15 update [Try it the moment you install] · On the welcome page that opens after install, "Try it now on YouTube" opens a TED talk with English subtitles already on — no sign-in or subscription needed · No need to pick a training style first. You start in fixed-delay mode and can switch anytime with Q while watching · The welcome page now also says the core features stay free after the 14-day trial ――――――――――――――――――― v0.19.16 update [Fixed] · Disney+ and similar: after replaying a line (R), jumping between lines or a big seek, the translation line could drift to another line's translation [New] · Linking marks now show as one rounded underline under each group of words that run together, instead of dotted lines broken at every space · Z key: if the translation line doesn't match the line above, press Z to re-sync it (on iPad: "Re-sync translation line" in the ⋯ menu) · The first time a translation line appears, a quick tip tells you about Z ――――――――――――――――――― v0.19.17 update [Changed] · If your subtitles are off, SubLater tells you sooner — when dialogue plays but no subtitles show, a tip asks you to turn on subtitles in the language you're learning, in about 20 seconds · On YouTube, the tip also shows how to switch captions to the right language (⚙ Settings → Subtitles/CC) · On iPhone and iPad, the welcome page now lists only the sites that work on that device [Fixed] · The Korean-subtitle tip told you to turn on dual subtitles (T), which actually turned off the translation line that was already on ――――――――――――――――――― v0.19.18 update [Changed] · The rating prompt now also has "Tell us what's missing" — if something isn't working for you, you can tell us why · The rating prompt now appears after 5 days of use (was 3) ――――――――――――――――――― v0.19.19 update [Changed] · If you had YouTube or Netflix open before installing, the welcome page now tells you and reloads that tab with one click so SubLater works right away · The "No subtitles yet?" tip now shows at most twice (it used to show on every video) · During the trial, the popup now lists what stays free after the trial ends · New to Korean? The welcome page has a Korean example clip · The example video now starts right before the speaking begins [Fixed] · Days with nothing but ad captions are no longer counted as days of use
