)Overview
Learn a language from YouTube and Netflix: each word's meaning above it, the line translated below. Nothing to set up.
Learn a language from the videos you already watch. Nothing to set up: no account, no key. Subgloss replaces the subtitles on YouTube and Netflix with a line made for learners: each word's meaning above it, the word being spoken highlighted, and the whole line translated underneath. WORKS AS SOON AS IT'S INSTALLED Open a Japanese, Spanish, French, German or Chinese video and each word's meaning appears at once, from a dictionary on your computer, with the line translated underneath: on YouTube by the uploader's own subtitles in your language where the video has them, or else YouTube's own translation; on Netflix by Netflix's own subtitles in your language, written by people. Where neither is there, Chrome's own translator is one click away on the video. Prefer Chrome's translator anyway? Choose it from Subgloss's toolbar button: it downloads once, about 100 MB a language, and works offline. Videos in other languages get the translation. Meanings are in English for now, and on Japanese videos in Simplified Chinese too, for learners who translate into it. MEANINGS IN CONTEXT, IF YOU LIKE A dictionary gives each word's first meaning, which is the one meant about four times in five. For the meaning a word has in this line: • Download Chrome's built-in AI from Subgloss's welcome page or its settings: Gemini Nano writes each word's meaning in its sentence, and Chrome's translator works offline. Gemini Nano needs 22 GB of free disk space, and 16 GB of memory or a graphics card with more than 4 GB. • Or use your own AI service, for the most accurate meanings in any language: an API key from Google Gemini (which has a free tier), OpenAI or Anthropic, or a model on your own computer (Ollama, LM Studio or another OpenAI-compatible server). Subgloss labels meanings from the dictionary or from Chrome's AI, so you always know where a meaning came from. Show meanings for the key words (the default), for every word, or only when you hover over one. CLICK A WORD TO STUDY IT The video pauses and a card shows the word's dictionary form, reading, part of speech and meaning. Hear it again from the video itself, slowed down, or in a clear voice. Shift-click to select a whole phrase. Step back and forward a line, or replay the one you just heard. With your own AI service you can also turn on a longer explanation: click a word to see why it means that here, and any phrase or grammar behind it. SAVE WORDS, MEET THEM AGAIN Save a word with the sentence it came from, its translation and a link back to that moment in the video. When a saved word comes up in another video, it is underlined, and its card tells you when and where you saved it. Your saved words have their own page: group them by day, video, or channel and show, filter them by language, search them, fix a meaning in your own words or add a note, and export them as a CSV file or as a file Anki imports. SAVED WORDS ON EVERY COMPUTER (OPTIONAL) Sign in with your email address and a code we send you, no password, and your saved words appear on every computer where you sign in. Everything else works without an account. GOOD TO KNOW • The video needs subtitles in the language you are learning. On YouTube, auto-generated subtitles work too. If a video doesn't say what language it is in, choose it on the video. • Netflix support is in beta: switch subtitles on in Netflix's own menu first. • Lines can be translated into 33 languages. Subgloss's own pages are in English. • Switch Subgloss off for one video with the power button beside the subtitles, or for a whole site from its toolbar button, and make the text bigger or smaller from the video. • Make it yours: hide the translation to listen and read in the language alone, have the line wait for you while the pointer is on one of its words, and choose how the spoken word is marked: a fill, an underline or both, in one of four colours. PRIVACY No ads, no analytics, no tracking, and we never sell data. As installed, meanings come from dictionaries on your computer, and translations are the site's own (the video's own subtitles in your language, or YouTube's translation), asked for by your browser as the site's player does. If you choose an AI service, subtitle text goes straight from your browser to it, using your own key. If you sign in, we store your email address and your saved words, and you can delete them at any time from Options → Account.
