Su: Distraction-free Reader and Annotator

Su turns any article into a calm, full-screen reading space, and gives you somewhere to think while you are in it. Highlight what matters. Put your thought and reaction in the margin beside it. When you are done reading, export the whole trail of thinking into your own notes app, where it belongs to you. READING Su extracts the article and re-renders it with no ads, no sidebars, no pop-ups. Set the font, size, line spacing, column width and theme once, and every article you open looks the way you want it to. SHORTCUTS Command-U or Alt-U to open and close. F for full screen. Esc to leave. ANNOTATING Select text and pick a color. Each color is a category you name yourself: key idea, action, evidence, question... or whatever you actually think in. Click a highlight to write a note in the margin beside the line that provoked it, or double-click any empty margin for a thought about the article as a whole. DICTIONARY Off by default. Turn it on in Appearance and you can select a single word to look it up without leaving the page. It is the one feature that reaches the network: the word you selected, and nothing else, goes to a public dictionary service. EXPORTING This is the point of the whole thing. Copy as Markdown or rich text, download a .md file, print to PDF with your highlights intact, or send straight into Obsidian (a Markdown notes app). Take your notes on their own, or the full article with your marks inline. A WORKSPACE, NOT AN ARCHIVE Su holds a piece while you are working on it, then gets out of the way. A page stays for 7 days after the last time you add to it, so working on something keeps it alive and re-reading it does not. After that its notes are set aside for another 7 days, where you can still take them back, and then they are permanently deleted. Su warns you before that happens. Exporting is how thinking leaves Su, and the exported copy is the one that lasts. PRIVATE BY DEFAULT No account, no sign-in, no sync, no ads. Your highlights, your notes and the articles themselves stay on your computer and are never sent anywhere. Pages you only read are never stored at all; a record is created the first time you highlight something. Su does send anonymous usage events, which feature you used and when, so I can see what to fix and build next. They never contain the text of a note, the text of an article, a page title or a web address. The one exception is the dictionary described above, which is off unless you turn it on. Leave it off and Su makes no network requests at all.
