Overview
Two subtitle tracks at once — original above, translation below — plus sentence-by-sentence shadowing for language practice.
Study Subs turns any YouTube video with subtitles into a language lesson. Two subtitle rows instead of one: the original track sits on a fixed reading line so it never jumps around, and its translation sits right below it. The words arrive as the speaker says them, and a pause in the talk is a pause on screen. Read it over the video, with the picture still playing behind the text, or turn the picture off for a full-screen reading page. One button either way. SHADOWING MODE Shadowing means repeating a sentence out loud right after the speaker until it sounds natural. Turn on Study and the video stops by itself at the end of every sentence — no hunting for the pause key. Then: • Repeat — play that same sentence again, from its start • Next / Previous — move one sentence at a time • Play — after a sentence has played out, Play replays it instead of running on Sentences are detected by punctuation, not by how YouTube happened to split the captions into lines, so one sentence stays one sentence. POINT AT A PHRASE Pause, and put the cursor on any phrase of the original: the part of the translation that answers it lights up, and the rest steps back. Not the whole sentence — the phrase. With the translation row hidden, the phrase you point at is the only thing that appears, and it appears in the place it holds in the line, so you can check one guess without giving the rest away. THE WHOLE VIDEO AS A LIST Transcript opens a column of every sentence in the video, each with its translation underneath. It follows the player and keeps the current sentence in view; click any sentence to play from there. Scroll ahead by hand to read on, and Follow hands the list back to the player. PICK UP WHERE YOU LEFT OFF Study Subs remembers the sentence you stopped at. Come back to the video and it offers to continue from there, and marks the spot on the scrubber. BUILT FOR PRACTICE, NOT FOR WATCHING • Playback speed from 0.5x to 2x, in steps • A scrubber whose notches are sentence boundaries — click to jump to the start of a sentence, never into the middle of one • Seven text sizes, three themes (Sepia, Dark, Light) • Translation into uk, en, pl, de, es, fr, it or ru — switch it mid-video • Hide the translation row with one click when you want to try without it • Turn the word-by-word arrival off if you would rather read ahead of the speaker, and keep the previous line on screen if you want it there • Set how long a sentence keeps playing after its last word, if endings sound clipped or the pause drags • Keyboard with Study on: Space play/pause/replay, Left/Right previous/next sentence, R repeat, Esc exit. With Study off the player keeps its own keys and Left/Right seek five seconds • Subtitles are cached on your device, so re-watching a video needs no network request at all HONEST ABOUT THE LIMITS • Translation is YouTube's own auto-translate. It is readable, not literary. • The video must have YouTube subtitles. If the text is burned into the picture, there is nothing to read. • On a long video YouTube's translation sometimes stops before the video does. Where that happens the overlay tells you where it ended, rather than going quietly blank. • If captions are switched off in the player, Study Subs turns them on for you. On a video where it cannot, switch CC on by hand once. PRIVACY Nothing is collected and nothing leaves your computer.
