Stilltake — Screen Recorder

Screen and microphone recorder with local WebM export. A $10 USD one-time license is required to record.

Before you install: new recordings require a $10 USD one-time license purchased through Dodo Payments. There is no subscription or expiration date. One Chrome profile can be active at a time; deactivate the old profile to move the license. Applicable taxes are shown at checkout. Your local library also requires a password you choose yourself. Saved recordings can be viewed and exported without an active license after unlocking with that password. Stilltake records a tab, window, or screen with optional microphone and available source audio. Recordings stay in a password-protected library on your device. Preview, rename, search, and export them as WebM files. Features • Choose your source in Chrome’s sharing dialog. • Record microphone and available tab or system audio. Source audio depends on the operating system, selected source, and Chrome’s sharing options. • Check the microphone with a five-second sample and audio level meter. • Pause and resume; choose up to 720p, up to 1080p, or the source resolution. • Encrypt video chunks, recording metadata, and the local license cache in IndexedDB using AES-256-GCM. • Manually lock the library when recording and other data operations have finished. • Save chunks during recording. Already saved portions may be available after an interruption; complete recovery is not guaranteed. • Use the studio in English, Simplified Chinese, Hindi, Spanish, French, Arabic, Bengali, Portuguese, Russian, or Urdu. The language is detected automatically and can be changed. Arabic and Urdu use a right-to-left layout. How to use 1. Click the Stilltake icon. On first use, choose and confirm a local password of at least 12 characters and acknowledge that it cannot be recovered. Enter it again whenever you reopen the studio. 2. If older local data exists, keep the tab open while it is encrypted. The studio becomes available after this resumable migration finishes; an existing Dodo license activation is preserved. 3. Open License and activate your key. The Buy button opens a separate Dodo Payments checkout; after purchase, use the key from the delivery email. 4. Select and test the microphone. Click Start recording and choose a source in Chrome’s dialog; enable source audio sharing if available. 5. Keep the studio tab open. Finish recording, check playback, and download important videos separately. Password and export The library password is never saved or sent to Stilltake or Dodo Payments. It derives a key using PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 with a random salt and 600,000 iterations, which protects a separate random data key. The usable data key stays only in memory while unlocked. Technical identifiers, chunk indexes, revisions, format information, salt, initialization vectors, and the encrypted key remain readable for storage housekeeping. There is no password recovery or reset that restores your encrypted library. Losing the password means losing access to its recordings and locally stored license details. A purchase or license key does not replace this password. Protect your device and browser profile too: an unlocked studio is accessible to someone controlling them. Migration does not guarantee forensic erasure of earlier plaintext disk or backup copies. Downloaded WebM files are ordinary, UNENCRYPTED files. Store and share them safely; local library encryption does not protect exported copies. License and data handling Activation, validation refresh, and deactivation need internet. Validation refreshes while the extension is used once the last successful check is at least 24 hours old. During a temporary connection or service failure, new recordings can remain available for up to seven days after a successful check. Invalid or revoked licenses do not receive offline access. The local password can unlock the library offline. Deactivation does not delete saved videos or the purchase. Recordings, audio, microphone samples, and recording metadata are never transmitted by the extension. The microphone test stays in memory and is not saved in the library. There are no application accounts, analytics, ads, or cloud video synchronization. License activation sends the key and the generic name “Stilltake Chrome” to live.dodopayments.com; validation and deactivation send the key and activation identifier. Dodo Payments also receives network information such as the IP address. The local license cache is encrypted in IndexedDB; after migration, localStorage keeps only the interface language. Customer names and email addresses from license responses are not retained. Separate Dodo Payments checkout handles email, billing, and payment; the extension does not handle card numbers. Checkout needs an email address, not an application account. The unlimitedStorage permission supports local video storage, limited by free disk space. The production host permission is only https://live.dodopayments.com/* for license requests. A separately marked TEST build uses test.dodopayments.com instead. There are no page content scripts or remotely loaded executable code. Limitations Chrome 116 or newer is required. Export is WebM only; MP4 conversion and camera recording are unavailable. Closing the studio stops recording and locks the library. Removing the extension, its data, or the Chrome profile removes the local library and encrypted key; downloaded copies remain separate. There is no server backup. Recording length depends on device resources and free space; unsaved chunks can be lost after a failure.
