Stepnote · Web tutorials
Overview
Record web actions as editable visual tutorials. Redact screenshots and export HTML or Markdown. Data stays on your device.
Turn your web actions into clear, editable tutorials with Stepnote. Walk through a task on a website, and Stepnote records supported actions as step-by-step instructions with screenshots. Edit the result and export it for onboarding, training, customer support, process documentation, or personal reference. • Record clicks and form changes on supported web pages. • Capture visible-page screenshots with click markers. • Pause, resume, and finish recordings from the extension. • Edit tutorial titles, step titles, and notes. • Reorder or delete steps and add explanations or screenshots. • Mask sensitive areas in screenshots before sharing. • Export a standalone HTML file with embedded images. • Export Markdown with an accompanying image folder. • Print tutorials or save them as PDF through your browser’s print dialog. • Export and import editable JSON backups. On first use, both the interface and new tutorials default to English. Choose interface and tutorial output languages independently from English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish. You can also choose to follow your browser’s language. Each tutorial’s output language can be changed in the editor. Automatically generated step titles and system text in HTML, Markdown, and print exports follow the selected tutorial language. Webpage labels, text inside screenshots, and manually written content remain in their original language. Updating Stepnote preserves existing tutorials and saved language preferences. To create your first tutorial: 1. Open the website you want to document. 2. Click Stepnote, choose your tutorial output language, and start recording. 3. Perform the actions you want to explain. 4. Finish recording, review the steps, and edit or mask content as needed. 5. Export your tutorial in your preferred format. Stepnote works locally without an account. Tutorials and screenshots are stored in the extension’s local storage for your Chrome profile. The extension does not upload page content or screenshots to a server and does not use analytics or remote AI services. Form values are not saved as step text. Automatic screenshot masking is enabled by default for common form fields and embedded pages. Screenshots may still contain other sensitive information, so review them before sharing. Recording supports common controls in the top-level content of ordinary HTTP and HTTPS pages. Browser settings pages, Chrome Web Store pages, embedded frames, and some custom controls are not supported for recording. Switching tabs or navigating to another website pauses recording. Screenshots capture the visible area and may be taken after an action. Rapid actions or navigation may produce text-only steps; you can add screenshots in the editor. Each tutorial supports up to 200 steps. Export backups before uninstalling Stepnote, as uninstalling removes locally stored tutorials.
