Sounter
Overview
Route each tab to its own speaker, with per-tab volume up to 120 % and an 8-band EQ.
Sounter is a sound router for Chrome™ tabs. It gives each tab its own output device, its own volume and its own equaliser. Play music on your headphones while a call runs on the laptop speakers. Make a quiet lecture louder without changing the system volume. Take the harshness out of one site and leave every other tab alone. WHAT IT DOES • Output per tab: send a tab's sound to any speaker or headphones your computer offers. • Volume from 0 to 120 %, with mute. Above 100 % a limiter keeps peaks under control. The meter and the Limiting and Clip lights show what is happening. • 8-band EQ: low cut and high cut (12 to 48 dB/oct), low shelf, four bells and high shelf. • Two views: drag points on a live curve with an optional analyzer, or use a fader bay with exact readouts. • Nine built-in presets (Flat, Bass boost, Tame harshness, Bass cut, Voice, Small speakers, Treble lift, Loudness, Late night) and presets of your own. • Undo, Reset and Revert to preset. • Routed tabs at a glance: up to 8 tabs can be routed at once. The tab list shows each tab's site, output and volume, and switches to that tab when you select it. • If a device is unplugged, the tab falls back to the system default and moves back when the device returns. • The toolbar icon shows which tabs are routed. Keyboard shortcut: Alt+Shift+A. SETTINGS STAY WITH THE TAB Each tab keeps its own output, volume, mute, EQ and preset while you browse. They last until you stop routing, close the tab or close Chrome. Your saved presets and preferences are kept between sessions. WHY THE MICROPHONE PROMPT Chrome reveals the names of your speakers and headphones to an extension only after it has been given microphone access. Without that access, Sounter can offer only "System default". If you allow it once, Sounter opens the microphone just long enough to unlock the device names and closes it at once. It never listens or records. You can take the permission back at any time in Chrome's site settings for Sounter. PRIVACY All audio is processed on your computer. Sounter does not record audio. It makes no network requests and has no account, analytics or ads. Settings, presets and a short diagnostics log are kept in Chrome's storage on this computer. The log keeps site names, never full addresses or page content. "Copy diagnostics" puts a report on your clipboard only when you click it. Sounter never sends it anywhere. GOOD TO KNOW • Chrome does not allow any extension to capture chrome:// pages or the Chrome Web Store. • For local files, turn on "Allow access to file URLs" for Sounter in chrome://extensions. • Requires Chrome 116 or later.
