Solarized Web — Eye-Friendly Theme for Every Site
Overview
Replace harsh whites and grays with the warm Solarized Light palette on GitHub, YouTube, Reddit, Gmail, and 25+ popular sites.
Tired of staring at harsh white screens all day? Solarized Web replaces the blinding whites and cold grays on your favorite websites with the warm, scientifically-designed Solarized Light palette — reducing eye strain without sacrificing readability. WORKS EVERYWHERE The extension ships with tuned support for a curated set of popular sites across search, email, social, media, productivity, and developer tools. For anything not on the built-in list, open the popup, switch to the Custom tab, and type any domain — the theme is applied instantly. HOW IT WORKS Two-layer approach for reliable, complete theming: 1. CSS Variable Overrides — Each site's design system (GitHub Primer, Gmail Material 3, Reddit RPL, etc.) is precisely remapped to Solarized colors. Instant theming, no flash of unstyled content. 2. DOM-Based Color Rewriter — A generic engine walks every element on the page and remaps hardcoded neutral colors (whites, grays, blacks) to Solarized equivalents. This catches everything that CSS variables miss — inline styles, dynamically loaded CSS, shadow DOM fallbacks. Semantic colors are preserved: errors stay red, success stays green, links stay blue. Only neutral/achromatic colors are remapped. FEATURES - Warm, eye-friendly Solarized Light palette by Ethan Schoonover - Per-site toggle — enable or disable theming on each site individually - Custom site support — add any website - Preserves semantic colors (red for errors, green for success, blue for links) - Lightweight — no frameworks, no build tools, pure CSS + vanilla JS - Privacy-first — zero data collection, no analytics, no tracking - Syncs preferences across your Chrome devices ABOUT SOLARIZED Solarized is a precision color palette designed by Ethan Schoonover for optimal readability and reduced eye strain. It uses carefully chosen color relationships based on the CIELAB color space, providing both a warm background tone and clear, comfortable text contrast. Used by millions of developers in terminal and editor themes, now available across the entire web. PERMISSIONS - Storage: saves your per-site on/off preferences (synced via Chrome) - Scripting: injects CSS stylesheets to apply the theme - Host access: required for each supported site (no access to other sites) - No data is collected, transmitted, or shared. Ever.
