A privacy-first smart tab organiser with local search, backups, groups, and smart organisation.

Too many tabs open, and not one of them safe to close. That is the problem Smart Tab was built for. Smart Tab saves the tabs you have stopped using, closes them so the browser gives the memory back, and keeps every page in a searchable archive in the side panel. Nothing is lost and nothing is uploaded. One click brings a page back. SAVE TABS THE WAY YOU ACTUALLY WORK • Collapse all — save and close every tab in the window at once. • Save tab — just the one you are on, from the panel, the right-click menu, or Ctrl+Shift+S. • Auto-archive — background tabs you have not touched in two hours get saved on their own. The timer is yours: anything from 15 minutes to a day, or off entirely. • Every save can be undone for ten seconds, so a wrong click costs you nothing. The panel keeps a running count of how much memory you have handed back. It is an estimate, worked out from a typical tab, not a measurement of your machine. THEY COME BACK THE WAY THEY LEFT Open one saved tab, open the ones you have ticked, or open everything on screen. A tab that belonged to a Chrome tab group comes back in that group, with the same name and the same colour. FIND THE PAGE, NOT THE BOOKMARK Search reads the title, the domain, the URL, your own tags, and a snippet of the page's text captured at the moment it was saved — so you can find a page by something that was written on it, not just by what it was called. Near misses still land: type "kubernets" and the Kubernetes docs turn up. Narrow a search with domain: and tag:. Press / for the search box and Ctrl+K (⌘K on a Mac) for the command palette, which runs every action in the panel by name. KEEP PROJECTS APART • Workspaces hold one project's tabs together, so client work does not sit on top of holiday reading. • Tags, pins and your own titles — rename a saved page to what it actually is. • Snooze a tab for an hour or until the next morning and it returns on its own. • Select several at once to open them, move them to another workspace, or clear them out. YOUR TABS STAY ON YOUR COMPUTER Smart Tab makes no network requests. Not one. There is no account, no sign-in, no sync server, no analytics and no ads, because there is nowhere for anything to go. Your saved tabs, workspaces, tags and settings sit in your browser's own local storage on this machine. The honest trade: with no server there is no sync between computers. Exports cover the gap. BACKUPS YOU ACTUALLY HOLD A backup of the archive is written once a day into Downloads/Smart Tab/backups. You can export at any time as well, and encrypt that export with a passphrase you choose (AES-GCM, with the key derived from your passphrase) — the passphrase is never stored and never sent anywhere, so keep it safe. Import reads Smart Tab exports, plain JSON lists of links, the text file OneTab exports, and HTML bookmark files, which is what most browsers and tab tools hand you. WHY IT ASKS FOR WHAT IT ASKS FOR Reading and closing tabs needs tab access. Rebuilding a group needs tab-group access. The daily backup and your exports need downloads access. Site access is used for one thing only: reading the visible text of a tab at the moment you save it, so the saved page is searchable by its content afterwards. Smart Tab never revisits a page and never injects anything into pages you are merely browsing. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO No cloud. No account. No AI summaries of your reading. No subscription, no upgrade prompt, no ads. It is free, and it stays free.
