Smart Tab Groups
Overview
Automatically groups your tabs by topic as you browse. Works in 5 languages. No setup needed.
Smart Tab Groups organises your browser tabs automatically — no manual sorting, no drag-and-drop. Open a tab and it lands in the right group instantly. HOW IT WORKS Each group has a list of keywords. When a tab finishes loading, Smart Tab Groups checks its URL and title against those keywords and moves the tab into the matching group. If no match is found, the tab stays ungrouped — nothing is moved unexpectedly. WHAT YOU GET OUT OF THE BOX - 6 ready-made groups: Work, Social, Video, AI, Dev, Shopping - Pre-configured keywords for your browser language (English, Russian, Polish, German, Spanish) - Colour-coded groups that match Chrome's native tab group colours KEY FEATURES Full customisation — edit group names, colours, and keywords. Add new groups. All settings are stored locally on your device, with an optional Sync setting to share them across your own Chrome profiles via your Google account. Right-click to reassign — made a mistake? Right-click anywhere on a page and choose "Move to group" to reassign instantly. Regroup all tabs — one button in Settings runs the matching logic across every open tab at once. Useful after restoring a session or enabling the extension for the first time. Import existing groups — if you already have Chrome tab groups, Smart Tab Groups detects them and offers to import them with one click. Built-in stats — see which groups you use most, filtered by the last 7 days, 30 days, or all time. RAM optimisation — optionally put inactive grouped tabs to sleep after a configurable idle time to reduce memory usage. Light and dark theme — the popup follows your system appearance automatically. PRIVACY Smart Tab Groups reads tab URLs and titles locally to match against your keyword lists. This matching happens entirely on your device — no data is collected or sent anywhere by default. Optionally, you can enable AI-powered classification by providing your own Anthropic Claude API key. When this feature is turned on, the hostname and page title of tabs that don't match your keyword rules are sent directly to Anthropic's API (using your own key) to suggest a group. This is off by default and only activates if you explicitly enable it and supply a key. No other data is sent, and your API key is never sent anywhere except to Anthropic. All settings and group configurations are saved in chrome.storage.local on your device — or, if you enable "Sync across devices", via chrome.storage.sync using your own Google account. PERMISSIONS EXPLAINED - tabs — to read the URL and title of each tab for grouping - tabGroups — to create, update, and manage Chrome tab groups - storage — to save your groups and settings locally - bookmarks — to automatically add group tags to new bookmarks - alarms — to run the RAM optimisation check periodically - contextMenus — to add the "Move to group" right-click menu - windows — to detect and clean up duplicate groups across windows
