Overview

Toggle Picture-in-Picture on any video with speed and skip controls, keyboard shortcuts, and in-window playback controls.

Chrome's built-in Picture-in-Picture gives you play/pause and a tiny scrubber. That's it. Smart Picture-in-Picture Controller pops your video into a real floating window — one with its own seek bar, skip buttons, speed control, volume slider, and settings, built right into the window itself. Keep it floating while you take notes, follow along in your editor, sit in a meeting, or just browse, and you're never stuck tabbing back just to skip an intro or slow down a tricky explanation. ⭐ WHY INSTALL IT 1. A floating window that actually does something Most "PiP extensions" just trigger the browser's native floating window, which only has play/pause. Smart PiP uses the modern Document Picture-in-Picture API to build a full control bar inside that window: a draggable seek/scrub timeline with live time labels, skip back/forward, play/pause, mute plus a volume slider, and a speed control — all without ever needing to switch back to the original tab. On older Chromium versions without Document PiP support, it falls back automatically to the browser's native PiP. 2. Remembers how you like to watch Set a video to 1.5x once on a course site, and Smart PiP remembers that speed for that site next time. Skip step and speed step are both configurable — change them from the popup or right from the gear icon inside the floating window itself. 3. Skip/speed shortcuts that follow the floating window, not whatever tab you're on This is the detail most PiP extensions get wrong: once you pop a video out and switch to another tab to actually multitask, their keyboard shortcuts stop reaching the video. Smart PiP tracks which tab is in PiP and keeps routing skip/speed commands there, so the shortcuts work exactly when you need them — after you've tabbed away. 4. Finds the right video without guessing Pages with thumbnails, ad players, and background loops can have several video elements. Smart PiP scores them by visible size and picks the one you actually mean to control — including videos inside iframes and Shadow DOM, not just the top-level page. 5. Works on any HTML5 video, no per-site setup YouTube, Vimeo, course platforms, news sites, embedded players — if it's a standard HTML5 video element, Smart PiP can control it. No configuration, no site-specific integration. 🎯 WHAT YOU GET • Toggle Picture-in-Picture — click the toolbar icon, the popup button, or press Alt+Shift+P • Seek anywhere — drag the timeline inside the floating window to jump to any point; shows LIVE instead of a scrub bar for streams with no fixed duration • Skip forward/back — default ±10 seconds, configurable, and correctly targets the PiP'd tab even after you've switched away • Speed control — 0.25x to 4x, configurable step, remembered per site • Volume control — mute toggle and a volume slider, right in the floating window • Settings without leaving the window — a gear icon inside the PiP window opens a small panel for skip step, speed step, and a loop toggle, in addition to the popup's own settings panel • Redesigned popup — one glance shows whether PiP is active and the video's real current speed, plus quick skip/speed/reset buttons • Keyboard shortcuts — fully remappable at chrome://extensions/shortcuts • A one-time welcome notification on install with a quick tip, and nothing else — the extension never notifies you again ⌨️ KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS (DEFAULTS) • Toggle PiP: Alt + Shift + P • Speed up: Alt + Shift + X • Speed down: Alt + Shift + Z • Skip forward: Alt + Shift + L • Skip back: unassigned by default — Chrome caps an extension at 4 default shortcuts, so set this one yourself at chrome://extensions/shortcuts (takes 10 seconds) 💡 WHO IT'S FOR • Students and learners — float a lecture or tutorial next to your notes; slow down dense sections, skip the parts you already know • Developers and designers — follow a coding walkthrough while your editor stays in focus • Remote workers — keep a meeting or webinar visible in a corner without losing your other windows • Anyone multitasking — news, entertainment, or background video that stays under your control while you do something else 🔒 PRIVACY Smart Picture-in-Picture Controller: • Does not collect, store, or sell any personal data • Does not use analytics, trackers, or advertising scripts • Does not communicate with any external server Everything — video detection, playback control, and your settings — runs and stays entirely inside your browser. 🛠 PERMISSIONS AND WHY • Access to all websites — to find and control the video on whatever site you're on, including players inside iframes, the moment you invoke the extension • Scripting — to inject the control logic into the page and its frames on demand • Storage — to save your skip/speed step settings and remembered per-site speeds, locally • Notifications — to show the one-time welcome notification after install. Nothing else triggers a notification 📥 GETTING STARTED 1. Open any page with a playing HTML5 video 2. Click the Smart PiP toolbar icon, or press Alt+Shift+P 3. Drag the seek bar, use the skip/speed/volume controls inside the floating window, or use the popup/shortcuts — whichever is faster for you 4. Click the gear icon (in the popup or inside the floating window) to adjust skip step, speed step, or clear remembered per-site speeds No setup required — it works the moment you install it.
