Tired of black bars when you watch YouTube in fullscreen? Smart Fill makes the video fill your whole screen without cropping anything and without the "fat faces" of a plain stretch. How it works Smart Fill uses a non-linear stretch. The middle of the picture, where the action and faces are, keeps its true proportions. Only the outer edges are gently squeezed or widened to fit your screen, with the effect growing smoothly towards the sides. You keep every pixel of the original video. How to use it • Go fullscreen on any YouTube video and press Z to switch Smart Fill on or off. • Or click the new Smart Fill button next to the fullscreen button in the player. • A short, smooth animation shows the change; leaving fullscreen turns it off. Made for • Laptops with 16:10 screens (16:9 videos get black bars top and bottom) • Ultrawide films on regular screens • Older 4:3 videos on widescreen displays Tasteful by design • Distortion is capped, so very differently shaped videos (like vertical phone clips) are only partly filled instead of warped. • Rendering runs on your GPU and only works when the video shows a new frame. Nothing runs while the video is paused or Smart Fill is off. Privacy Smart Fill collects no data at all. It has no analytics, makes no network requests and only runs on youtube.com. Note: some paid YouTube rentals are copy-protected and can't be processed; Smart Fill will tell you when that happens. Black bars that are part of the video itself can't be removed.
