These spectacular birds, gathered on an exposed branch, are Carmine Bee-eaters (Merops nubicoides is likely, given the overall red plumage and distribution). They are immediately distinguished by their brilliant deep pink to carmine bodies, set off by a vibrant turquoise-green crown and throat patch, and long central tail streamers. My three decades of avian ecology in African savannas have frequently involved observing these magnificent communal breeders, who often hunt insects in coordinated flocks, as suggested by their proximity here. The bird on the right, captured with its wings fully extended, showcases the broad, dark flight feathers that propel their swift, agile movements. We can note their slender, decurved black bills, perfectly adapted for snatching bees, wasps, and other flying insects mid-air. Their striking coloration and highly social nesting habits make them one of the most compelling and visually stunning species I have encountered on the continent.
