This majestic wading bird, captured in powerful flight against a vivid blue backdrop, is the White Stork (Ciconia ciconia). Defined by its largely white plumage, this species is dramatically contrasted by its black flight feathers and a striking, long, pointed red bill and red legs, visible here in sharp relief. My decades spent tracking Palearctic migrants have often centered on this iconic bird, noting its immense wingspan, perfectly suited for soaring on thermal currents, which is an energy-efficient method essential for its long-distance migration between Europe and Africa. The broad, outspread wings reveal the precise arrangement of black primaries and secondaries necessary for maximum lift and control. We observe that its head and neck are held straight out in flight, a posture that distinguishes it from herons. This stork embodies the spirit of seasonal change and is closely associated with cultural narratives across its range.
