Skim & Speak reads any webpage aloud, or summarizes it first with Chrome's built-in on-device AI — completely free, with no subscription, no credit card, and no account required. WHY SKIM & SPEAK Most "free" reading extensions ask for a credit card before your free trial even starts, then lock the good voices behind a paywall. Skim & Speak doesn't. It uses your browser's own built-in voices and Chrome's own on-device AI model — nothing to sign up for, nothing to cancel, nothing sent to any server. WHAT IT DOES • Read any webpage aloud — click the icon, hit play, and it reads the article while you follow along with live word highlighting. • Summarize first, then listen — get the key points via Chrome's on-device Summarizer (Gemini Nano) before committing to the full read. • Summaries in the article's own language — automatically detects and summarizes in German, Spanish, French or Japanese when the source page is in one of those languages, or pick a language manually. • Read or summarize just a selection — highlight any text on a page, right-click, and choose "Read" or "Summarize" without touching the rest of the page. • Read a specific element — right-click a single comment, card, or block of text to read just that. • Paste your own text — a manual fallback for the rare page where automatic extraction doesn't work. • Adjustable reading speed and choice of voice, all running locally on your device. PRIVACY Everything happens on your device. Page text, summaries, and audio never leave your browser — there's no server to send anything to, because this extension doesn't have one. Open the side panel, click play, and get back to whatever you were doing — it keeps reading while you browse. Let me know if you want it shorter, or a different tone before you save the draft.
