Sidenote is a notepad that lives in Chrome's side panel, next to whatever you are reading. Open it with the toolbar icon and write. Paste a screenshot and it stays in the note. Save an image you find with a right-click. Drop in a link and it comes back as a card with the page title and picture, not a bare URL. Collect images into boards. A board sits inside a note as a grid you can rearrange, which is what you want when you are gathering references rather than writing prose. Watching a tutorial? Press Alt+S. The video pauses and the panel takes focus so you can write down the thing you just saw. Press Escape and the video resumes where it stopped. YOUR NOTES ARE FILES, NOT A DATABASE Point Sidenote at a folder and it writes every note there as a Markdown file, with the images beside it in an attachments folder. Boards are written as JSON Canvas, which Obsidian opens as a real canvas you can move around. Nothing is locked in. Open the folder in Obsidian, VS Code, or Notepad. Put the folder in a sync tool and your notes follow you to another machine. If you ever stop using Sidenote, the files are still there and still readable. SHARING, WITHOUT HANDING OVER YOUR NOTES Any note can become a read-only link. The note is encrypted in your browser before it is uploaded, and the key travels in the part of the link after the # character, which browsers never send to a server. The server stores something it cannot read. Delete the share and it is gone from the server immediately. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO No account and no sign-in. No analytics and no telemetry. No ads. Nothing is sold or shared. It asks for no access to the sites you visit when you install it, and works without that access on most pages.
