Translate text within the sidebar panel via two different AI engines (fully offline).
Sidebar Translator (Using AI) is an extension that helps you translate text by using two different AI engines. They run locally on the browser and are fully offline. This addon has two different AI engines. The first and the default AI is the built-in Gemini Nano (https://developer.chrome.com/docs/ai/translator-api); the second AI is called NLLB-200 (https://huggingface.co/facebook/nllb-200-distilled-600M). When you first open the addon interface, both AI engines need to download trading and language data from the Internet. After this process, they both work fully offline and without the need for an internet connection. Please note that the training data for these AI engines is quite large (around 1-3 GB). So, please be patient while the addon prepares and downloads the necessary training and language data. To work with this addon, please press the toolbar button to open the interface in the browser side panel. Then type any text in the top text area and then click the translate button (right arrow) on the footer toolbar. Alternatively, you can select a text on any webpage and see the translation within the sidebar. Before using the addon, please choose the desired target and source languages from the option page. Currently, for the built-in Gemini Nano AI, only a few target-source combinations are available. For the NLLB-200 AI, a wider variety of languages are supported, but it runs a lot slower and needs more resources (CPU and RAM) compared to the built-in AI. After you choose a language pair, you can see the support status on the side panel. Switch between these two AI engines and see which one best fits your needs. If you want to change the font size or color, and a few other self-explanatory settings, please visit the options page. Note: For Gemini Nano AI, please press the - Download - button (appears when needed) at the bottom of the sidebar to start downloading the training data.
