Overview
Browse local folders in a tab-specific sidebar. Preview Markdown, highlighted code and Office documents, and save favorite folders.
Browse local files without leaving your current browser tab. Side Fileview turns the browser's side panel into a browser for your local folders. Open a local file and the panel shows the folder around it; click another file and it opens in the same tab, rendered and easy to read. No file manager, no local web server, no uploads. BUILT FOR AI-GENERATED DOCUMENTS LLMs and coding agents often produce a whole folder of output: reports, notes, scripts, spreadsheets and data files. Open one result in the browser and Side Fileview keeps every sibling one click away. Read the summary, jump to the next report, check the script that produced it and inspect the data it wrote, all in one tab, with the folder visible beside you. WHAT YOU CAN DO • Browse the folder of the current local file, move through subfolders and open any file in the same tab • Open the panel on any tab: it starts from your last folder or a folder you choose, and leaves the page alone until you click a file • Click the path bar and type or paste a folder path to jump straight there • Read Markdown as clean, sanitized pages with tables, local images and highlighted code, plus a table of contents that follows your scroll position; switch to the raw source with one click • Read source code with syntax highlighting for dozens of programming languages • Pretty-print JSON files with one toggle • Preview Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents without installing Office • Open common archive formats such as ZIP, 7z and RAR like folders, preview the files inside without extracting, and save a single file when you need it • Star favorite folders, filter the current folder as you type, and locate the open file with one click • Choose the text size, the default Markdown mode and the interface language (English or Simplified Chinese); light and dark themes follow your system ONE PANEL PER TAB The side panel belongs to the tab where you opened it. Other tabs keep their own panels, or none at all. GET STARTED 1. After installing, open the extension's details in your browser's extension management page and turn on "Allow access to file URLs." 2. Open any local file in the browser, for example by dragging it into a window. 3. Click the Side Fileview toolbar button or press Alt+Shift+F. You can also type "sf" in the address bar, then press Tab, Space and Enter to open or close the panel. Tip: pin Side Fileview to the toolbar from the extensions menu for one-click access. The panel opens on the side your browser is set to use; the settings dialog links straight to the browser's side-panel position setting. PRIVATE AND LOCAL Your files never leave your device. Side Fileview has no account, server, analytics, advertising or cloud sync, and it never uploads file paths or file contents. All code, including the document and archive renderers, is bundled inside the extension; nothing is downloaded at run time. Markdown, archived HTML and Word documents are shown with scripts disabled. Favorites and preferences are stored only in the browser's local extension storage, and the extension never modifies your files. Note: the browser may download some file types instead of opening them directly. Open any HTML, text or image file in the same folder first, then pick the file from the side panel to read it in Side Fileview's built-in preview.
