ShortText - Article Summaries
Overview
This extension auto-generates summaries of news articles, and allows you to post them to your Twitter or Linkedin account.
This extension utilizes state-of-the-art abstractive summarization techniques from the realm of NLP (Natural Language Processing) to auto-generate summaries of news articles directly from your browser. Users can navigate to a news article on popular news websites (such as CNN) and generate either a shorter summary or a longer summary. The extension provides additional functionality to post the generated summaries to the user's Twitter or LinkedIn account. This extension was the product of a capstone project from the MIDS (Master of Information and Data Science) program at the University of California, Berkeley in 2021. The capstone project was focused on the problem of reducing manual and human text summarization for high velocity content marketing for marketing teams globally. Using CNN news training data and XSUM data, we are applying the state of the art abstractive summarization - PEGASUS model for our MVP for teams working on Social Media Marketing; we intend to use our MVP to contribute to peer and industry learning about the use of abstractive summarization to alleviate the need for human/manual text summarization. Currently works on CNN, New York Times, BBC, and ESPN. Additional websites in development.
