SHERLOQ — Magnifier
Overview
Inspect images and PDFs with the SHERLOQ magnifier. Adjustments, sweeps, image selection and optional local OCR.
SHERLOQ is a free, open-source image analysis project intended to detect fraud, manipulation and retouching. It brings together established methods and some of the most advanced image-forensics research tools currently available publicly. This extension lets you use the SHERLOQ magnifier directly on images in web pages and in an integrated PDF reader. Activate it from the extension icon, then inspect the image with your own settings. Level, window width, gamma, saturation and histogram equalization can reveal details that are hard to see in the initial image. A sweep varies one parameter and displays each calculated step. You can save bookmarks, export the displayed image and customize shortcuts. The extension looks for higher-resolution versions accessible from the page. Within PDFs, sub-images have their own histogram calculations while staying in place on the page. An image selection lets you keep several images and send them to SHERLOQ’s batch processing. The Web and Local buttons open your chosen content in my SHERLOQ adaptation. From the PDF reader, the original PDF is transferred. For the full set of tools in my web adaptation, including TruFor for detecting and locating manipulations, D2PRL for copy-move detection and other, more recent research methods, SHERLOQ web is available free of charge here: https://gaeldauchy.com/sherloq/ Getting started Click the SHERLOQ icon in your browser’s extensions, then hover over an image: the magnifier appears without clicking the image. On a PDF already open in the browser, the same icon opens the SHERLOQ reader. R opens settings and pins the magnifier. Click a number to type a value, use its small arrows or move its slider. Presets include Default, Brush detection, Brush detection 2 and Histogram equalization. They preserve your magnifier size. Default commands • R: open or close settings. • ↑ / ↓: increase or decrease diameter. ← / →: adjust the transition band. • Wheel: change magnification. “Automatic size” restores a diameter fitted to the window and a 60-pixel transition. • B: start or stop sweeping the chosen parameter. • : and =: decrease or increase the chosen parameter with your step size. Each step is calculated and displayed, even while you hold the key. • Hold Alt or O: see the image without effects. • M: save a bookmark. [ and ]: move through bookmarks. • E: export the displayed image as PNG. • A: add the image to the batch selection. • Shift+O: OCR inside the magnifier, excluding its transition, then copy the text. • L: turn off the extension on a web page; toggle the magnifier in the PDF reader. With the magnifier off in the PDF reader: wheel or pinch to zoom, trackpad or drag to pan, double-click to fit the page. The ? button opens this help in the extension. The ⚙ button opens general settings, where you can change shortcuts and set up several key pairs for different parameters. Known conflicts are flagged. Text fields and menus on the page remain usable. The extension’s calculations run on your computer. Optional OCR reads the area shown inside the magnifier and copies the text to your clipboard. Models already present in your SHERLOQ library are reused; OCR asks for your approval before downloading missing files from GitHub. Source code and instructions for building the extension without the Chrome Web Store are available in the project repository: https://github.com/Kinkazma/sherloq-web Guido Bartoli created the original SHERLOQ. I developed its web adaptation; this extension reuses its engines and preserves the credits of the integrated methods. A visual response alone does not establish retouching or fraud.
