SEO Institute Wikipedia Broken Links Finder helps researchers and editors find and verify broken external links in Wikipedia articles related to specific topics. The extension runs in the Chrome Side Panel, allowing you to search, review, and export results without leaving your current browser tab. KEY FEATURES • Search Wikipedia articles by keyword Enter one or more keywords to find Wikipedia articles containing both your topics and known broken-link markers. • Flexible AND/OR keyword queries Use a half-width comma (,) for OR conditions within the same group. Use a half-width period (.) for AND conditions between groups. Example: search engine,google.AI This query means: ((search engine) or (google)) AND AI Full-width commas (，) and periods (。) are not accepted. • Language-aware keyword matching English and alphanumeric keywords use whole-term matching. For example, “SEO” matches “SEO optimization” but does not match “aSEOb,” “mySEO,” or “SEO2.” Chinese keywords use contiguous phrase matching, making them suitable for text that does not use spaces between words. For Chinese Wikipedia searches, the extension also accounts for Traditional and Simplified Chinese variants. • Chinese and English interfaces The interface language is selected automatically according to your Chrome language. If the Chrome language is unsupported, the extension uses English by default. You can switch languages manually at any time. The selected interface language also determines which Wikipedia language and Chinese language variant are searched. • Find multiple types of Wikipedia broken-link markers The extension searches for several commonly used Wikipedia broken-link indicators, including: • Dead link templates • url-status=dead • dead-url=yes • fix-attempted=yes • Optional archive-link filtering Broken links that already have an Archive URL are excluded by default because Wikipedia may already provide access to an archived copy. Enable “Include broken links that have an archive URL” if you want these results to be included. • Extract useful citation information For each broken-link candidate, the extension can display: • Wikipedia article title and URL • Original external URL • Citation title • Source website or publisher • Broken-link marker • Marked date or access date • Archive URL • Archive date • Nearby citation context • Verify the current URL status The extension checks each extracted external URL to determine whether it is currently: • Dead • Still available • Redirected • Soft 404 • Replaced with unrelated content • Returning a server error • Timing out • Failing because of a network error • Unable to be verified An HTTP 200 response is not automatically treated as a valid page. The extension also checks for common Soft 404 signals, homepage redirects, parked domains, and replaced content. • Filter and review results Results can be filtered by status: • Dead or Soft 404 • Alive or redirected • Unable to verify Each result includes expandable details and clickable links that open in a new browser tab. • Export reports Export the current results as: • UTF-8 CSV • JSON Reports include the query and various information, like Wikipedia article information and citation context. • Local search history The extension stores up to 100 recent search summaries in Chrome’s local storage. You can rerun previous searches or clear the entire search history. The selected archive-link option is also preserved when rerunning a search. PRIVACY Search history and interface preferences are stored locally in your browser. The extension does not require an account and does not upload your search history or exported reports to an external server. Search requests are sent directly to the official MediaWiki API, and extracted external URLs are accessed only when their current status needs to be verified.
