Select to Speak
Overview
Select text, right-click, and hear it read aloud.
Select to Speak reads any text you highlight in your browser out loud. Highlight a passage, right-click, and choose "Speak selection" — or press Ctrl+Shift+Q to skip the menu. Pause, resume, and stop from the same right-click menu. Adjust while it reads. Speed, pitch, and volume each have a right-click submenu, and changes apply to what is currently being read rather than waiting for the next passage. The options page adds finer control and a voice picker. Picks a good voice for you. Your system's default speech voice is often the oldest one installed. Select to Speak ranks every voice your browser offers and automatically uses the most natural-sounding one that matches your language. You can always choose a specific voice instead — the list is grouped so the lifelike ones are easy to find. On-device AI voices. Optionally download high-quality neural voices from the open-source Piper database. They are synthesised entirely on your computer — the text you select never leaves your machine — and work offline once downloaded. Handles long passages. Select several paragraphs and they are read through without truncation. No accounts, no tracking, no data collection. Text you select is passed to your browser's own speech engine and nothing else. Note: browsers do not allow extensions to run on internal pages, so the right-click item will not appear on chrome:// pages, the Chrome Web Store, or the built-in PDF viewer.
