Overview

Scroll pages with the arrow keys at an adjustable speed, plus smooth animated jumps with Alt+Up/Down.

Scroll Smoothly for Google Chrome™ – Effortless keyboard scrolling with buttery-smooth motion Tired of the jerky, stuttering jumps you get when you press the arrow keys on a long web page? Scroll Smoothly replaces Chrome's abrupt line-by-line stepping with fluid, continuous motion that feels natural and easy on the eyes. Hold the Up or Down arrow and the page glides at a steady, adjustable speed for as long as you keep the key pressed. Let go and it coasts gently to a stop instead of halting with a jolt. Reading long articles, documentation, forums, code reviews or social feeds becomes calm and comfortable, with no need to reach for the mouse or trackpad. HOW IT WORKS Simply hold the Up or Down arrow key on any website. The page accelerates smoothly from a standstill to your chosen cruising speed, keeps moving while the key is held, and glides to rest the moment you release it. Need to get somewhere faster? Hold Alt (or Shift) together with the arrow key to engage a speed boost, so you can sweep through long pages in seconds and slow back down to normal speed the instant you release the modifier. Scroll Smoothly is smart about where it scrolls. It looks at the element under your mouse pointer, or the element that currently has keyboard focus, and finds the nearest scrollable container. That means it works just as well inside chat windows, side panels, code editors, embedded lists and other nested scroll areas as it does on the main page. If nothing scrollable is found, the whole page scrolls as you would expect. The extension also stays out of your way when you are typing. When the cursor is in a text field, text area, search box, drop-down list, rich text editor, slider, video player or any other editable control, the arrow keys keep their normal behaviour so you never lose cursor movement or accidentally scroll the page while writing. Shortcuts that use Ctrl or Cmd are left untouched as well. FULLY ADJUSTABLE Everyone reads at a different pace, so every part of the motion can be tuned from the settings page: • Scroll speed – set how many pixels per second the page moves at full speed. Choose a slow, relaxed pace for careful reading or a brisk speed for skimming. • Acceleration time – control how softly the page starts moving. Set it to zero for instant top speed, or increase it for a gentler, more cinematic start. • Glide after release – decide how long the page keeps coasting after you let go of the key, from an immediate stop to a long, smooth deceleration. • Speed boost – choose the multiplier applied while Alt or Shift is held, so the fast mode is exactly as fast as you want it. Changes are saved automatically as you move the sliders, and they take effect immediately in every open tab with no reload required. A single click restores the built-in defaults if you ever want to start over. DISABLE IT WHERE YOU DON'T NEED IT Some sites already provide their own keyboard navigation, or you may simply prefer Chrome's default behaviour on certain pages. Add any host name to the Disabled sites list, one per line, and the extension will step aside on that site and all of its sub-domains. You can also switch the entire extension off with a single toggle and turn it back on whenever you like. PRIVATE, LIGHTWEIGHT AND OFFLINE Scroll Smoothly runs entirely inside your browser. It does not collect, store or transmit any browsing data, does not track you and does not show advertisements. It works fully offline, has no background network activity and adds no noticeable load to your pages. Your settings are stored in your Chrome profile and synchronise across your devices when Chrome sync is enabled, so your preferred scrolling feel follows you to every computer you sign in on. The settings page is clean and easy to use, with a light and a dark theme that follows your system preference, and it is available in more than forty languages. WHO IS IT FOR? • Readers who spend hours on long-form articles, e-books, wikis and documentation. • Developers and writers who like to keep their hands on the keyboard. • Anyone who finds sudden page jumps distracting or uncomfortable. • Users of laptops and small trackpads who want a relaxed alternative to constant swiping. • Accessibility-minded users who prefer predictable, gentle motion. GETTING STARTED 1. Install the extension. 2. Open any web page and hold the Down arrow to see it glide. 3. Add Alt or Shift to speed up. 4. Click the extension icon to fine-tune the speed, acceleration and glide, or to disable it on specific sites. Scroll Smoothly is free, open to feedback and regularly updated. If it makes your daily browsing more pleasant, please take a moment to leave a rating — it helps other readers discover it and keeps the project going.
